In Sport / Bumpy Road mode, fairly aggressive on the throttle, shifting at 6,200-7,000 rpm, I can hear a well pronounced squeal as the next gear engages (both even and odd gears). I thought that it could be a loose engine or driveline mount, or something more serious. The car is still under the CPO Warranty until the end of June (2013 with 4,800 miles). I'm planning to have it checked by an independent and highly reputable local shop first. Anyone experience a similar condition or have any ideas as to the cause?

    Thanks ..... VJ

    Viperjoe,

I confirm my 458 does the same thing, although not as pronounced/audible as in Floydison's video. It doesn't do it all the time, but it's fairly frequent. Interesting enough, I find the noise in question much more evident in a video my girlfriend made with her cell phone, than when I'm actually driving. When driving, barely notice it at all.

I have been told this is normal and isn't a failure of some kind. Truth is my 458's transmission and gearbox have behaved nothing short of perfect until this day (*knocks on wood several times*).

If you have it checked by an independent, please let us know his/her opinion.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Floydison: That linked thread was very informative and the sound in the YouTube video is precisely what I'm hearing. Big thank you!

I just got done driving mine and the chirp wasn't there.. I think in my case it's worse when it's cold out.

    Its the belt jumping.

You can have it tightened but it will just come back. Seems to be a normal 458 thing.

i have this too. seems to only appear after i've done some hard driving on the backroads. I thought it was normal, actually sounds kinda cool like a pneumatic air shifter. doesn't seem to effect driving at all.

Can't say that I care much about the sound of it, but once it's the nature of the beast and not a defect, no problem.

Which specific belt, by the way?

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

I unplugged the vacuum lines so that the exhaust is open all the time. Can't hear any shift squeaking during shifts. The pops and gurgles are wonderful sounds. Try it.

Every 458 that I have driven will make that belt squeak noise when shifting at full throttle at high RPM. You cannot "tighten" the serpentine drive belt as it is automatically tensioned. You can replace the serpentine belt, but the noise will return. I consider it the nature of the beast.

I had the same issue on my Speciale which was driving me slightly mad. After three different Ferrari main dealer attempts/inspections they were not able to get to the bottom of it. The factory insisted that this was part of the character of the car and could not come up with a rational explanation as to why some cars squeak and others do not. We tried changing the auxiliary belt, tensioners, inspected the engine mounts, went over the exhaust in case something was loose, checked the gearbox oil levels etc, all to no avail.

A friend of mine suggested I reach out to a to Ferrari specialist that also has a racing team that had come highly recommended. After being on a call with the chap for less than a minute he knew what this issue was and had a solution. It turns out the issue was with the Ferrari OEM auxiliary belt! Its smooth on one side so is prone to slippage. How Ferrari claim to not know this is beyond me!

Long story short this garage suggested switching the OEM belt out for a Gates Belt which has grippers on both sides. I had it supplied and fitted for approx 250 pounds and that fixed the issue. Happy days : )

    I hope this helps.
