    Hello all,

As the title states, I took a gamble on a 348 ts. Some of you may have seen the quite "inexpensive" one recently in the LA area.

I have yet to see the car, but I am supposedly the buyer.

I've been coordinating with the seller and I'm organizing a pickup.

Now, let me state that I know this car is a "project". But even with that said, did I goof up?

Here's the BaT link, some of the comments made me a little nervous. Wish I could get in touch with the user "Wob":

    Please Be Real: $35K 1992 Ferrari 348 ts | Bring a Trailer

If anyone knows anything about this car it would be greatly appreciated. It looks from the comments that possibly the wheels have been put in the wrong place, it's got the wrong badge, it's possibly been painted, etc. There's also some strangeness with the title, but that's a story for another day.

Thank you all for your time. I hope to join you all here, assuming there aren't any dark secrets which are worth cancelling the purchase over.

Well, the good news it is a 1992. So it will have most of the factory updates. The 348 motor is very robust. Assuming you have good compression and the gearbox shifts well, everything else is fairly easy. I bet you did well. But, plan on spending $7,000 to 10,000 for a major service unless you've got the ability to drop the motor.

Really depends on whether you paid the ask or negotiated the price down. If at the ask, I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I'd wager that by the time you get the car to where you want it, you'll be into it for ~$50k unless you're skilled and can do a lot of work yourself. At ~$50k, you'd be at about (or perhaps just under) the price point for a no stories, sorted, lower mileage 348. Others might have a different opinion (better or worse).

I owned a 348tb for 6 yrs and currently have a 355. I wouldn't have bought either car without PPI and/or transact with VERY reputable sellers. It worked out well for me. Eg, in 6 yrs of 348 ownership, I had virtually no issues with the car other than a dead battery and a leaky rear shock. On the other hand, the 348 wasn't a "bargain" either.

But kudos for being willing to save the car. A 348 is worth saving. They're fantastic cars when properly sorted.

It was once advertised as 92644. I'd be curious if that's correct and to know the build date and assembly number for my database.

    My suggestions are....
Try to find out where it may have been serviced and get a copy of the records (most mechanics/dealers will print a redacted copy for you)
Don't register the car/sales tax until you have had it checked out if you bought it before a PPI and compression test (and shakedown drive). Some states have 7-10% sales tax and you may be able to purchase it with lesser tax if it is better to part the car out. I doubt that is the case.

I'd suggest having $15k, no joke, to fix this car up to a B+ level assuming there a few minor fixes and an engine out. Things like brake rotors/pads, cv boots, fluids, sticky parts, and minor parts that may need replacing. If you can wrench yourself, take 60% off that or more. If you have cylinder/cpu/tranny/clutch issues, that will be a bit more.

I assume this won't be a concourse car so you won't have to go all crazy but I'd fix the rims for sure.

I will even bid the costs up to 20.000 for a major!
I hope you got the car for free?

Now for some reality, I assume you know your way around cars, otherwise you would not have bought it.
So I also assume you can do most if not all of the work of servicing yourself.
This forum has a wealth of info to guide you through most processes.
So if it only needs a major and maybe the clutch + flywheel attention(but no real transmission problems otherwise), and has no real problems in the engine , costs can be kept to just a few 1000's on service parts. Then you did very well, and in the mean time got to work on a Ferrari as a bonus...

Hope it works out for you because the 348 is a great car. Have to love the BAT comments, a bunch of Ferrari "experts" that don't have a clue about the car.

Congrats! When you get it in your possession it will be a lot easier to know how well/poorly you did.

That's a very good question, I am fairly certain he had the factory wheels on it, not the current black ones.

Looking at the roof line and confirmed with the badge, this is a GTS, not a TS.

If a GTS it's a much rarer car.

    Mmmhhh. Maybe not.

Maybe a fake badge, that's why it's misaligned.

There's no such thing as a 92 GTS. Someone just replaced the badge.
Just look at the plenums on the engine pic. It's the old style not the ones that came on the GTS, GTB.

Correct, not a GTS. There is also a car on eBay right now (1990 blue in Puerto Rico) that has a GTS badge.

And "looking at the roof line"? What are you talking about?

Thank you all! I am very pleased with the welcoming responses here. I was quite worried with the BaT posts.

Fortunately, I am very handy with automobiles. I am an amateur racer with a pretty equipped personal workshop with a lift and whatnot. I plan on doing all of the work on it myself.

I have a friend in my area with a 348, he has done the engine out service on his, I think he will be really helpful to chat with.

I know it's far from a concourse car, but for me to obtain a 348 I have to make some compromises.

I appreciate the information and I will keep everyone updated.
