lol .... sorry andreas....but back on topic....Alonso is talented on the track but his character, for the most part has taken a "this-car-sucks-and-I-will-let-everyone-know-it" nose dive.

Lewis is "best" when he is on the track.

Camon, you of all people? You think it's ok to bash a driver that helped Ferrari win 3 titles and would have won more if not by Alonso and his pal "britatore" cheating, a guy that almost lost his life while driving for Ferrari, someone who as always been loyal to teh team, someone who gave up a victory in his own country in order to give the championship to his team mate, one of the most honourable drivers in the grid1 And you are offended because people bash a peecock that has had all the luck ionh the world?

I don't see it. Barring mechanical failure, pit stop snafu or getting caught up in another's accident I think that he will finish in the top three.

The important thing is for Fred to keep cool and stay on the same lap as the leaders. We all know there will be no shortage of yellows. Then get down to business in the last 100 miles.

Alonso is obviously a much better driver than all of the competition he will face at Indy..but experience will prevail i would assume, so it will be very difficult for him...i hope he won't get seriously hurt because Indy can be a very dangerous place...

I have no clue about oval racing in the US but this is what I was asking myself as well. Why do people think he will win although he actually is the only guy in the race with zero experience in this sort of racing? If he just could go over, jump into the car and show the other guys how it is done this would be extremely embarrassing for the established drivers...

The only way I could think of is that McLaren brings some sort of technological superiority into the equation that isn't used in indy. When you see the hoards of people sitting in a control room in and F1 race and the immense amount of number crunching to get the best out of the tyres then maaaaaaybe there is some performance benefit to be gained. And then this is a world Alonso is used to (the interaction between rocked science and race car driving).

I say all that with having no clue how technologically advanced Indy racing is and I might well completely wrong.

I hope to one day suck half as bad as Alonso.

I can understand how people don't care for his antics though.

Mansell moved from F1 to CART in '93, and won the championship -- although he only finished third at Indy.
And yes, he didn't get along with the other CART drivers. ;)

(Another driver known as a good driver, but a PITA. :p)

But since the CART season finished before the F1 season concluded, Mansell is the only driver to have held the CART and F1 drivers championships *at the same time*.

(Michael Andretti, who moved from CART to F1 in '93, had a less successful transition.)

But for "embarrassing", I give you Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Colin Edwards winning the 2002 Nations Cup. ;)
(Shortly after that, they moved the RoC/NC into stadiums and made it a big videogame. :p)

Alonso to decide future after summer break

Fernando Alonso is not ruling out staying at McLaren beyond the end of his 2017 contract.

Many people see the works Honda-powered team's ongoing crisis, and Alonso's decision to skip Monaco in favour of the Indy 500, as a clear sign that his patience with the Anglo-Japanese collaboration is up.

Asked what is keeping him at McLaren-Honda now, the Spaniard told EFE news agency: "The team."

So he doesn't rule out staying in 2018, but he said McLaren would have to be "in a position to fight for the world championship".

"I am hopeful that things will improve, but from September or October I will be open to any kind of negotiation, whether with McLaren or any other team," Alonso added.

When asked about the Indy 500, he sounded unapologetic about skipping Monaco later this month.

"What is clear is that we all need a joy, a result, something, since there is a minimal possibility of winning something here. And it has aroused a huge interest.

"For now we are uncompetitive and unreliable but the year is long, we can do important steps and improvements. I still hope to be happy in the second half of the year," he said.

Alonso revealed that Honda has explained in detail where they intend to make improvements.

"The team is putting everything behind them, because it's not used to being behind so they're putting all the resources needed to help Honda," he added.

"There is a series of races in July but after the summer there will be enough time to analyse what has improved in the team, how is the evolution, to see if the team's curve is flat, up or down, and that will be the moment to see what I will do next year.

"But I will be in F1," the two-time world champion insisted.

Too bad he can't win races with Mclaren..not even if Stoffel crashes the car after he's just pitted!!

'But i will be in F1'

That means if he can't find another drive he will continue with the big A$$ bucks from McHonda.

Don't see anyone fighting to sign him for 2018,the problem he has is that the driver's make less and less difference nowadays,it's all about the car.Looking at most grids its the Ark procession 2 by 2.

So the day's of a driver being able to make 1 or 2 seconds a lap difference in the same car are long gone. Maybe 0.1 -0.3 in normal conditions maybe a bit more if it's wet.

Then there is of course the history/baggage that follows him around,he really should bow out to WEC or race in the USA while he still can.

Exactly...we see it every week that the cars are almost always paired in the grid by team. Latest Rosberg beating Hamilton last year showed that there is little to no difference between the drivers and if the car is good more than a handfull of them can get the job done. One disadvantage of Alonso is that he is nearing the end of his F1 career so he might be a short time option but not on the long term. I do not see which team would really benefit from him in their current position...And yes: I still rate Alonso high before someone says different...

Alonso is lucky that Honda became fixated by him " being the best driver in F1" and managed to twist Ron Dennis' arm to have him back.
It's no secret that Dennis and Alonso cannot stand each other and a some past history.
For the sake of having a guaranteed supply of engine (free) and a main sponsor, Dennis put their difference aside, swallowed his pride and recruited the Spaniard who must have been jubilant to get one over his old foe.
Little did he knew that he had just engineered his downfall!
3 years later, Dennis is gone, but Alonso is still suffering from an inferior car.

McLaren needed a factory engine deal and Honda was the only one to step up.

This is the start of the 3rd year. He's not completed the 3rd year, hell not even a quarter through it!
