Presumably because most teams know they actually haven't really got a chance at signing him. They know he wants a race winning car, and they know most can't offer him except the dream of (another) long term project...Realistically speaking only 3 teams can offer him a chance at winning races:

Mercedes (can see it happening only if Elton leaves)
Ferrari (would they have him back with Vettel there?)
Red Bull (won't sign him because they don't need to)

The rest can't offer a winning car, so his true hopes are that Honda gets their house in order.

So does he keeps p*****g them off by his attitude, vents his frustration in public, makes a show of their failure and is such a bad ambassador for his employers?

At least he's honest. Mclaren Honda have totally messed this up. Pretending it's all wonderful would make Alonso look much more foolish. Even the mclaren fan base can see that. No one is giving Alonso grief for his behaviour. Quite the opposite in fact.

Can they afford to lose him? Stoffel isn't a bad driver, what if they put another unproven next to him...they'll be sharing the grid 17th and 18th?

Tomorrow Alonso will once again complain bitterly about his car and then park it.

    It's a pattern.

To be honest, Honda doesn't need a twice WDC in a car that keeps breaking down.

Once the car can actually successfully complete a gp, they'll need him. He'll be the difference to scoring good points vs battling a Haas for 13th.

    That's a bit harsh.

If 15 cars failed to leave pit lane,… he would have at least had a fighting chance!

To be fair it is difficult to evaluate Vandoorne given the erratic performance of the McLaren/Honda. Have both cars been relatively on par for one complete session?

I don't think Honda is out of the wood yet because today the car held together miraculously and Alonso qualified 7th, do you?

So, how long to you recommend he should wait before making up his mind?

I mostly blame Alonso for wasting his talent at McLaren.

He should have pulled the plug after the first year and left then. He has made similar decisions before.

I am pretty sure that he would have found another seat available, giving him better enjoyment than this charade in the last 2 years.

If he had been in the market, maybe Haas would have taken him, or Renault, or Williams, who knows. That would at least allowed him to climb back to some meaningful results.

Or maybe a switch to WEC or Indy, since he fancies both apparently.

This year, obviously. Like I said, 1st year was testing the waters, expected more from Honda at the time but what can you do. Keep in mind the engine was made with size zero in mind at Mclaren's request. Year 2 was bad, but upgrades started working. However, big promises where made for 2017, surely by now they'd know what they would be doing?

Again, where would he have gone after last year? There where no seat openings. Ferrari signed Kimi again, Elton veto'ed Alonso, Williams was a possibility, but had Honda delivered on the promise...he'd likely spend the season looking at the back of his old Mclaren!

This year is the time when he needs to make his decision, and that'll be based on whatever Honda does with their upgrades. In any case, whatever they write in that contract, I'm convinced he'll have it written in bold caps lock lettering ''IF THE CAR SUCKS, I CAN WALK AT ANY MOMENT''.

Leaving after a year on a 3 year contract...Ok. Sure he's done it before, but we're looking at this 20/20. Try and leave that out. I don't think anyone would've foreseen such bad development. Mercedes was not possible. Ferrari was not possible. Red Bull, not possible. What team could give him what he wanted? Certainly not Renault, Haas or Williams.

Renault was completely rebuilding the team, and then there's the Red Bull factor...same engine but vastly superior team.

Haas...Give me a break. You're not actually serious? Haas will never be a competing team for as long as they're using the Ferrari's parts bin. Always a year behind.

Williams. Whilst it's a very good team, Mercedes doesn't allow them to win.

Mclaren was going to be his best bet after year 1 still, since Merc/Ferrari/RB wasn't available.

I am not saying that either of those would have given him a winning car, but he could have had a reliable engine, at least, and been able to score points regularly, and maybe - thanks to his talent - the occasional podium.

But what had he achieved at McLaren?

At least, had he taken a step back, he would have been in the market looking for another opportunity in a top team. Just look how Kimi did it, by going to Lotus, and then back to Ferrari.

With all the promises made, maybe he is just guilty of trusting in mclaren, a once mighty powerhouse of F1, and then honouring a contract (since those who are stating he should have walked immediately are the same people who would character assassinate him for doing such) based on further promises and the expectations that such a great team would indeed get it right eventually. Finally, in the last year of his deal, he is free to express his dissatisfaction with it all, and look for something else. In the meantime, I'd say I'd be pretty happy to believe the management bull**** whilst I languished on £30million a year or whatever he gets! If anyone has made a fool of themselves, it's mclaren and Honda not being able to give the guy the car that would have guaranteed them results, maybe even championships, in his hands.

Looks like the car should be competitive in Monaco ,round all those corners.Alonso might have shot himself in the foot again with this one ...

Does it really matter? We'll just have to see how Button and Vandoorne do. My expectations for them are minimal.
