I attended an auction today tempted along by a 365 GTC / 4, (didn't sell so may do a post auction seal) and watched a few 308 and 328's go under the hammer for good prices.

I saw a US 1979 308 with these bonnet latches, they have a down turned support to stop the bonnet flapping about like mine does that doesn't have these. Why didn't they fit these to euro cars? Very strange as the bonnet really does vibrate in front of your eyes without these!

Anyway, good to see these little differences.

I think those are dot safety things to keep the hood from taking your head off in an accident

    Yep.

I believe you are correct. But ....... I

The hood, at its shape and angle to the driver's/passenger's compartment are a near perfect guillotine.

    At least I noticed that.

Those prices don't look that strong to me!
It does confirm what I was told a few weeks ago; that the Porsche market continues to attract interest but the Ferrari market has cooled.

    Hi Andy,

Correction - the only decent 328 sold well. The other 3x8's were pretty scruffy and needed some work. One of them was a V12!?

Surprised the TR's did so badly.

You are right, F market has certainly cooled unless the car is excellent.

In addition to these two fasteners, the US 308 also had a horizontal reinforcement in the middle of the hood.

Did you get a look at the cat D 355 GTS by chance? Most of the Ferraris that did not sell seem to be imports and I wonder if some 'speculators' are trying to exit having bought 'cheaply' from abroad.

Yes I saw it, nothing special. Yes there were mostly imports. All junk really. Makes you appreciate your own car!

Those do absolutely nothing until the hood is driven backward in a accident and prevent it from going through the windshield.

Great safety measure and very interesting that Ferrari thought so little of their owners they didn't incorporate it on all the cars.

How does this design work? Would like to see the counter piece. I'm not convinced of the reliability of this design in the event of a frontal crash.

    Best Regards

As the hood is closed, the two posts with the large heads pass through holes in metal plates welded to the chassis. The plates have slots which trap the heads and therefore the hood should they be pushed rearward slightly during a collision. It is a robust well-designed system.

At the scene of the accident the hood will slide back towards the windscreen as the front of the car is violently compressed. There is a left and right receiver for those tabs forcing the hood to compress and fold with the car.
Works kinda like a wine glass holder on a boat.

They are not really intended to "Stop" the hood, IMO.

They are supposed to catch it and force an upward deformation crinkle, keeping it from leaving it's position.
The spare tire will be forced upward too, to "help"...

It's a horizontal "catch plate", as described above

I will do my best to avoid a full frontal impact then! Sounds painful.

But I'd like these more because they presumably rest on the scuttle plate and stop the bonnet moving about when driving.

Well, we have two latches, against the Euro versions one at the center?

They touch nothing until a frontal collision. Whatever problem you are having, these will not correct it.

Yes, only one center latch. And therefore the hood sometimes, depending on speed and wind it
wobbles like mad. More while passing a truck.
Especially at speeds above 120 mph.
In the beginnings of my ownership I tried all things like adjustment, new front compartment seal to get a tighter seat. Nothing helped, so I ignored it in the future :)

Put an overly thick foam block (like the radiator support seal) under each rear corner, and call it good!

It certainly cannot blow off, at least...going forward!
