Great Saturday for Alonso and for open wheel fans in general in that Bourdais is on the mend. That was a savage hit which, as many posters have said, would not have been survivable in decades past.
Good luck to Fernando & all others today.
PS: I understand the drama of making the fast 9 requalify for the pole, but making all others requalify strikes me as absurd. Is another 2 hours of TV time really worth the risks? Just my 2 cents ...

The traditional qualifying procedure was much more exciting, IMO. But when you don't even have a full field the "bubble" doesn't mean too much.....

Yah I agree with that. I'm not impressed with this 2 day format. Yesterday was a let down. It's a bit meaningless. I would like to see the whole thing on the line in one shot -- take it or leave it. Then let others the second day fight to get into the race until time runs out.

And liked it in the past when the team principle would wave off a run if they think they can do better later on. It used to be more exciting, particularly with the back markers in "the old days". Remember all the wheeling and dealing to get a car in the race? That was fun.

Alonso did well. I'm looking forward to seeing him race.

    Awesome indeed.

Now, Alonso should concentrate in the race on staying on the lead lap, clean pit stops and see how he stands on fuel and pace after 400 miles. If he can do all that well he could win.

    Okay. That's Alonso's strategy. Only 31 to go. My guess? 31 x the above. :p :)

Mind-blowing first lap by Dixon. Great job by Alonso and really the whole Andretti team. It's remarkable how ordinary the Penske team's performances were, but we know Roger always seems to have good strategy on race day.

Mind blowing was Arie's 237+ lap in qualifying, 236.9+ 4 lap average in '96; both official 'cause it was qualifying.
And....his 239+ (unofficial, but everyone's watches confirmed) in practice??? That was mind blowing.... :)
Good ol' CART days. (I know, it was IRL in '96 but they were still using CART ruled cars :))

How come Alonso doesn't get a Spanish flag next to his name in the graphics?

    Just saying...

They were using leftover CART cars and Tony George wanted to upstage CART. They turned the boost way up to get these lap times. Arie said this isn't safe. We should not be doing this.

Crazy that Scott Dixon drives a car at 230MPH + and then gets robbed at a friggin Taco Bell Drive Thru a few hours later. His wife and Dario were with him. Glad it he didn't get shot. Geez, you just never know....

    Love it!

Anyone seen any odds on winning for the various drivers? (Not a proposition to wager, just curious how the bookies see this thing.)

(Psssttt...did you actually read my post? I stated they were CART cars....)
Oh, okay. Then I guess the IRL looked the other way when giving luyendyke the blow-off valve after disqualifying him Saturday so a CART car could set a record they could/would not match 21 years later.
What do I know....thanks for the education.
