    Alas, the race is yet to run. Numbers and speed in practice is one thing. 500 race miles is another. There were only 3 (Penske) Mercs in '94 but one was the winner.... ;)

    Was it '95 that Penske actually missed the mark with the new car? Sad day for the "Captain". But I recall some Mercs (with reduced boost 'cause of their domination in '94) still made the field. Kizdan was talkin' engines.

    edit: Yeah, just checked. It was the PC24 that let Penske's record get tarnished.They just couldn't get it up to speed. There were 5 Mercs in the race, the best being Rahal in 3rd. 1 in '96 Davey jones finished 2nd. And 8 of the 27 car field in the U.S. 500 that same day (the split of CART/IRL) were Mercs; best of which was Eddie Lawson (yeah, the biker...) in 6th.
