I get what you're saying - some level of specific talent is required or no amount of coaching, analysis, or hard work will allow you to break through to be one of the best. I agree.

But I would just add that it is not data coaching alone. Different formula cars require different driving styles to get the maximum out of them. I think this is particularly true of F1 cars. So there is always a lot of learning/coaching as the drivers transition.

Jackie Stewart was quite insistent (in an interview I read about 5 years ago) that all top drivers now need coaches to reach their maximum capability.

Isn't this true of any sport? They all have coaches of various kinds. Fitness, data, technique, mind, nutrition, everything. Having said that, stroll needs them more than most to try and bridge the natural talent gap that he has. It's not working.

Claire Williams: Critics should be 'kinder' to Lance Stroll and cut him some slack

What ****ing planet does she live on?

Similar starts to Vettel and Kimi? First of all they both scored a point on their debut, in Kimi's case this was still points only till 6th place! Secondly they weren't a second a lap slower to their retired teammate.

Kimi was on his way to a podium in his 4th or so race (Imola), but for some bizarre reason his steering wheel fell off on the straight (yes, really).

Vettel on his 6th ever race he was in the LEAD of the rain soaked Japanese GP, and a net third..only to be ruined by Elton's tactics behind the safety car. IIRC he was much faster on track than Webber at the time despite Vettel being in a STR)

She should wrap him up in a nice blanket and keep him safe.

The funnier part of this article is that she is essentially saying - Lance is no Max Verstappen.

What do you really want her to say? What can she say?

I'm mean the problem more so is that from a PR standpoint, the kids just buries himself. The PlayStation comment... the "please help me" comment on the radio (very Nico-esque)... the complete lack of remorse for crashing time and again...

In a sport where data is everything, where a quarter twist of some bolt makes a serious difference, his biggest cost to the team is not just the money... it's the lost time in pre-season testing and FP to actually learn about the car and make the changes and updates.

Don't assess Stroll until 2018 says Stewart

F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart has defended struggling rookie Lance Stroll.

18-year-old Stroll, whose father and sponsor is the fashion mogul Lawrence Stroll, is under fire as he struggles with his first season in F1.

But amid suggestions Stroll brings $50 million to the Grove team, his team boss, Claire Williams, is backing him.

"He is being treated unfairly and gratuitously," she is quoted by the Journal de Montreal.

"Like any new driver, it takes time. And he's a very young driver who has a lot to learn.

"I think every young driver needs at least a year to familiarise themself with the car and the circuits," Williams added.

Some might say that Williams would defend Stroll, but also backing the youngster is F1 legend and triple world champion Stewart.

"I think, like many others, we will have to wait at least a year before we assess him," the Scot said. "I have not been surprised by his difficulties, in fact.

"F1 is the pinnacle of motor racing and it takes time before you can compete against the best in the discipline. But he has proven he has the talent to succeed," 77-year-old Stewart added.

"He's in a good environment, a good team with Williams who have developed great drivers in the past."

And ahead of Stroll's first home grand prix in Montreal, Stewart also thinks the Canadian public needs to give the driver time as well.

"Canada wants another Villeneuve, but you were spoiled with Gilles, who in my opinion was the most reckless driver in the history of formula one, but also one of the most brilliant.

"And his son Jacques was able to take over in a remarkable way," Stewart added.

He really needs to step it up at CGV. Either outqualify Phil (not likely) or at least place in the points.

What urks me is everyone in the "racing press" who ask to give him a break when others were criticized for being much better at avoiding crashing.

    There are two problems here

Stroll is slow and Massa is just driving great. I think Massa feels he has something to prove OR is just out there enjoying himself for once as the Team Leader.
