Mine is based on the theoretical option of being provided with one for free, but never allowed to sell it, so values don't come into the equation. Plus having never driven any of them its on looks and engineering.
    1...F40
    2...Enzo
    3...288 GTO
    4...F50

    not a La Ferrari fan.

    1) LaFerrari
    2) Enzo
    3) F50
    4) F40
    5) 288

It's crystal clear that every new car is a lot better (more responsive, alert and exciting) and faster (bar the F50-F40, which were close) than its predecessor. You can't beat progress.

I am wondering if people who adore the F40 have actually driven it.

Hint: It's not a very good car by today's standards...

I get the F40 appeal. I can't honestly say I've ever driven an F40, or any of the supercars, but I must say, it certainly has a very distinctive presence that none of the others have. The car is frankly just mad about something. It's so raw, it's visceral, and offers nothing more than an extreme sense of awareness. There are times it would be #1 on my list.

Compared to its successors it's got a laggy, non-linear delivering engine, mediocre brakes, recalcitrant gearbox and a weird undesteery/oversteery behaviour at the corner entry and exit, based also on whether you are on or off boost. If TVR or Noble launched such a car today it would be slashed by the press.

You may be right (I can't honestly say) - but it sure is a bad a** looking car. Now, if it only sounded like the Enzo.

I've ridden in one a couple times and it was an amazing experience...like an enclosed go-kart on steroids.

#1 supercar imo F50 GT (less than 1000kg!) followed by the F40 LM/GTE. Doesn't matter that after.

Being driven in one is one thing, pushing is another altogether. The shortcomings make themselves known.

By the way, the cars you mention are race cars.

I still consider them supercars, but regardless you won't find a lot of people that have driven all 5 road versions...and push them to their limit.
