The way Alonso conducted his career, he is now in a dead-end street, IMO.

He has been twice at Renault already, twice at McLaren, and once at Ferrari.

There is only Mercedes and Red Bull left!

But probably Toto Wolff is wise enough not to touch him; as for Red Bull, they have a different recruitment method.

    So, not much choice.

    Unless Indy ...

What if Ferrari were able to tempt Max away playing upon the weakness in the Renault engine. Would Red Bull then pick Sainz (as per their normal staff from within) or jump for Alonso?

    I don't think so either.

Red Bull promotes new talents and don't recruit former WDCs.

I think Ferrari should do that too.

Alonso to Penske to replace Helio Castroneves ... who will drive in the 2018 Indy 500 (only) and partner Montoya in Penske's yet-to-be announced prototype. Just my wild ass guess!

Renault is probably Alonso's only logical choice. But then, Renault isn't really the Renault Alonso drove for before.

Williams? Force India? Sorry about that.
