I took the starter to my mechanic today. He said my bendix gear was broken. He was able to spin the gear manually. Is this not what is supposed to happen?

I will take it to be rebuilt. Hopefully this is the issue!
I will still do a spark plug check and report back.

Dead simple way to test the alternator - once you get your car running. Have the engine running. Turn on your headlights. Turn off your car but leave headlights on. The second you turn off your engine your headlights SHOULD dim a little (enough to be visible). If they don't dim, then that means your alternator isn't working. HTH

what please is a bendix gear?
I know a complete bendix starter ( so a starter made by bendix, even you have a bosch inside ) but never heard about a bendix gear

oh, google knows nearly everything, it is the starter pinion

Maybe people can chime in their opinion of the Bendix Gear being the issue.

The mechanic showed me how he was able to turn the bendix gear by hand.

On a good starter, does the gear not turn freely?

Are we now suggesting that the starter is turning, but that the gear is broken and it is not turning the engine?

Is the engine turning, that should be quite obvious to tell/see?

Sounds funny to me. Like the starter is either not engaging the flywheel, or the motor has no compression.

    Suggested Test:

Have someone else crank it over while you look to see if your accessory belts are moving. You might have to jack the rear up a bit in order to get your head under there. Bring a flashlight.

the gear in one direction moves freely, so you can turn by hand, the other direction is blocked. that is normal

EnzoSteve- quick question: have you tried calling the dealer that just completed the major service to have them look at the car? Seems likely, given the complexity of the major service, that they may have not fastened or done something 100% and should take care of it gratis as part of standing by their work. If you pull too much apart yourself, if the problem is traced to the engine-out service, they may not agree to take care of it. Just a thought... Good luck getting it sorted!

    Hey Everyone

    Update:

I just picked up my rebuilt starter today. The guy replaced the solenoid, bendix gear, as well as the some of the internals which were in bad shape. He said it was a mess in there. Something about an bent arm?.

I installed the new starter and the engine started right up.
Never been better! What a difference!

Thanks everyone for your input and help!
I am so happy to be learn something and be back on the road for the summer.

    The starter rebuild cost $350.
    Is that good?

if they replaced all "out of limit" parts and also the solenoid, the bendix gear and bent arm - then it is a good price

labor should be about 1 to 1,5 hours - if all goes fine :), but you also may need 3 hours if there is a problem with dismanteling

Just a question for those of us who watched the video - does your oil pressure shoot up as quickly to the middle as in the video? I can't remember what mine does but I didn't think it shot up that quickly. Not saying that's a bad thing, just wondering.

I think before he made the video the engine just have been ruinning, so it goes fast until the oilpressure is there. when you start after long time it takes a little longer
    that is nomal

Great news. I replaced my starter when I did my clutch. It was already out and easy to replace for cheap.

I bought a new one but not from Ferrari. Same Bosch number but something like $300 instead of $$$$$$ in a yellow box.

Wait...so the only problem was that the engine wasn't actually turning over? I would have never assumed that given the starter pitch didn't sound faster in the video.
