1983 Ferrari 308 QV Speedometer Sensor

My speedo is getting a little flaky too. When it gets bad enough, I am probably just going to buy a new sensor from Ricambi America though and just be done with it.

Regarding your used sensor with the different connector, if you want to put in the effort, I am sure making an adapter pigtail would be straightforward. I wouldn't cut the wiring harness on the car itself though.

Received my package from superproformance Friday. Took 4 days from the time I order all my goodies to get here. My odometer and speedometer both would stop working after 15 to 20 minutes after driving. After reading many of the threads on here I decided to purchase a new sending unit. An actual Ferrari part. I thought it was cheap compared to other places I checked. Put it in today drove around for over a hour with no problems. I think its fixed!!! Thanks to all for your research and advice.

 

If I change the sensor will I lose my gearbox oil or is it dry?

 

The sensor screws in from the top of the case pointing downward, so just don't do it while the engine is running, and you're fine

 

The early models are on top and the later ones are on the bottom.

Are there different sensors for mph and Kms? Got one from superformance and speedo does not work at all, mine is a kms car.

 

I don't think so -- I believe all versions (that use the "electronic" sensor) use the same 116987 sensor. Is your odometer also not working?

 

With original sensor, the speedo and odometer work to start then the speedo dies with the odometer, then the speedo comes alive again but no odometer. Same thing every day. Forgot to mention this is on an 85 Mondial QV with separate speedo and odometer, I have posted in that section to but I seem to have more joy here as to the sensor

 

I'll have a look at the MondialQV wiring diagram tonight, but, even though the speedometer and odometer are in different locations, I believe that they use the same signal from 116987 -- i.e., would be very unlikely that one could work while the other didn't if the 116987 sensor was bad (and since you report that that does happen = might be something else).

 

Yes, one side of the 116987 sensor (RN wire) goes to both the speedometer and the odometer, but the other V wire (which I think is a constant +12V source) comes only from the odometer assembly (and unfortunately, the interior details of the odometer assembly are not shown). So something must be in the air. My 308 QV is experiencing the intermittent speedo/tach issues.

What is the procedure for replacing the sensor?

1. Remove sensor
2. Replace sensor (Anything (tape) on threads?)
3. Does the gearbox oil drain out in the Q.V. when replacing the sensor as it appears to be on the bottom?
4. Good time to replace the gearbox oil?

Sorry for all the questions but thought once we can get this laid out I could take pics and post with the instructions.

I have a sensor on order.
