So, do you have the red sketches or is GM supplying them? I remember that getting one's own work out the door was not supposed to happen.

As for yellow, when the leader was prone to yellow cars personally there was likely some spill over effect.

Was the majority of your work across the years in silver?

I have most of my original artwork that I saved over the years. Every 6 months, we would have to purge the files and throw everything away, but I always got a pass to take mine out. Saved everything. Most guys just didn't care, and it's all lost to history. I have a 2 ft. tall stack of my sketches. Getting photos of the full-size airbrush work was a bit more challenging. But I managed a few ;) I'll post some full size airbrush work.

I'm going to look, but I didn't do that many yellow sketches. It never made sense for the sedans I was working on. If I had been doing Corvettes, it would have been a different story.

Over the years my work was silver, black and red. No green cars (Mitchell didn't like green)
a few blue, but mostly black, red & silver.

I'll bet! Guessing it would've taken a pretty short lens to match AF/VK's way of selling "Wide Track" photographically!

On a talk show on KPFK radio in Los Angeles (each Saturday at 1 pm) Art Gould and Dave Kounz mentioned a new Lincoln Continental, a full size one, that they saw, that had more Bentley influences. I wonder if the ex-Bentley designer who accused them of stealing Bentley's design cues will go into a tizzy again. The only thing I can remember of their description was that the door handles are in the side chrome but I am expecting a Rolls/Bentley style grille. I wonder if this will be shown at the AFAS art show at Pebble Beach on Aug. 19th?

I asked Freeman Thomas about it when I saw him at the Trancas C & C but he denied all knowledge of it, he is in charge of Advanced Styling at Ford (do they still call it styling?)

I thought Ford changed the nomenclature to design as well.

    More Bentley influence?............there's a surprise ;)

    Pretty sure it's Italdesign post-Giuigiaro, i.e., fully VW-owned.

Also, pretty sure this is a design for Lambo for a limited run of cars. So, Lambo-excess design to the power of 2, AND badly executed.

Besides all the bits, flaps and slashes, the profile is so unsexy and bloated!

Thanks for posting these sketches Jim. Is that fist side view a early version of he Pontiac Stinger concept car ? Also talk about visibility , look how low he beltline is on these sketches, how times have changed ! Great to see some traditional marker and chalk sketches too.

    Good eye!
Yes Pontiac was way ahead of the curve regarding the CUV/SUV segment. I've got a ton of sketches of that project which were a lot of fun. The Stinger was just the beginning. We did a lot of proposals that the public never saw during the late '80's- '90's. Unfortunately the Aztek came out of some of that, but I wasn't involved with that program .......

Funny the low belt lines got my attention as well. It's all about trends and fashion. Today's high beltlines are the result of a desire to have high beltlines, not any regulatory issues.

They don't make the chalks or vellum they used to make, so that technique is pretty much dead. Now it's all PhotoShop and the myriad other sketch programs.

He had some pretty uncreative designs in the 1980's and 1990's also. But this thing is just bad. I guess street cars are feeding off of race cars. Have you ever seen a modern LMP1 car :)

    Very nice sketches John.

That was hilarious , thanks for posting the link John. I remember really liking the Stinger when it came out on the show circuit. It came out just as I was starting ACCD, remember studying it quite closely. I also quite fond of the Pontiac Sunfire concept that came out shortly after the Stinger, I especially remember the wheels for some reason, it was all the rage to have a dark center back then on sketches !

It's cool to look at those old PR pieces. They really date themselves.

The Stinger was done in California at the Advanced GM Design Studio. It had quite a few innovative features which are now on many small crossovers. Too far ahead of its time.
