Ferrari already have a "good neighbour" mode on their modern cars.

On start up, they burst into life with a shed-load of revs and glorious noise that the neighbour's get to enjoy for free! :)

(BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS IS IN THE UK WHERE AMERICAN V8 CARS ARE QUITE RARE):

Years ago I owned a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am (black with T-tops - Natch), and I was working shifts at the time, meaning leaving for work @ 5.30am every morning.

The Trans Am had sportier exhausts than standard fitted and was quite loud, so @ 5.30am, it wasn't exactly neighbour friendly.

One Sunday afternoon, I was just finishing up polishing the car when a neighbour from a couple of doors up came by and said:

"Every day at 5.30am I get woken up by the sound of that V8 firing up, clattering and rumbling away as you go to work.......It makes My windows rattle!"

"Sorry about that! I do try to leave as quietly as possible, barely rolling down the road, but the exhausts are non-standard. I am planning on replacing them with some quieter standard exhausts."

    To which he replied:

"Oh God, don't do that!, I'm not complaining......I love the sound! It's the best sounding Alarm clock I've ever heard!"

He asked if I would fire it up for him so he could listen to it, and I said:

"I'll take you for a spin in it if you like...it's no trouble".

So we went for a cruise around Town with the T-tops out and it made his day! :)

So for some neighbours, making the car quieter on start up is not being a good neighbour! ;)

(I'm not sure the other neighbours felt the same way, but non of them complained to Me about the noise)

When Homer Simpson was invited by his long lost brother to be in charge of a new car design:

Sure. So you can sneak out of your mistress's apartment at 4 in the morning. :)

I would prefer a "passing by a bored cop" mode.

this reminds me of a conversation with the guy restoring our '77 930, when it came time to choose the exhaust.
we asked him what was available, and he said:

'you have 3 choices; standard, loud, and 'piss-off-your-neighbors' loud. '

    we chose the last one.
