In my 360 u shut battery off, then after sitting u turn key to position 2 for 10 minutes as the ECU resets to original factory settings.

Is it the same procedure for a 95 355?

    Thank u

On a 95 355 after reconnecting the battery you start the car and let it idle for 10 minutes. HVAC, light, radio, etc must be off. Car started w/o depressing the accelerator pedal.

I turn the battery knob in boot off when away - when back I turn on - then start and let sit for 10 min?

    Thanks

At the track, the battery is cut off for refueling. The battery is then reconnected and the car is started and left to idle. By the time I'm in the car and my harness is fastened and adjusted, it's time to drive off. About ten minutes.

The instructions seem a little ambiguous to me. Does the manual's requirement to have your car at normal operating temperatures mean that the car must be at normal operating temperatures for the whole 10 minute period?

Does the car then not learn any parameters of the dome light is on? Or the ac?

The engine will learn 'incorrect' parameters, those associated with slightly higher loads on the engine.

This is also why the oil must be at temp, so the pumping of oil does not get misinterpreted as a higher than typical load. A/C is the same.

No. Basically it means the car has to idle long enough to enter closed loop mode before it can learn. 10 minutes is just a sufficient time. It's easy to over think this.

IIRC when I was playing with the ecus there are other values set for cold start however the engine coolant and oil temp must be below 68 F or the car will not set cold enrichment properly in open loop, no biggy when it's 95 degrees outside.

Like the guys stated engine up to temp is just fine, take a 10 min break for you favorite beverage and a cookie.

In addition to what the others have said.

The ECU needs to learn what the resistance of the throttle position sensors are. Based on that it can determine how much the throttle is open/closed, which is why you are NOT to touch anything, and have everything turned OFF, while it is going through the initial warmup process. Then it goes through and sees what all the sensors are at and makes adjustments accordingly until the engine has warmed up. If things are left on, or are touched, it will put a load on the system, changing the values the ECU sees, and screw up initial settings.

In other words put all lights on so you get an amp drag and the ecu will give it more spark-fuel at a lower rpm for better performance :)

Got to do it again - lights on.

Push out of garage ....... start from cold and let run for 10 min.

Do u have to have battery shut off for a specific time?

So I'm assuming run car to get to temp, "stable water temp." Disconnect battery 5 min to be safe, then turn everything off and turn battery back on and start car while hot for 10 min.

Thanks - I have never done this and have had 4 95 355's. Next thing is throttle cable check per post - now that I live in rural PA I have to work on my cars. Changed the battery on my 355 - what a crazy process that was!

Thanks guys, guess I need a lift now.

Everything you needed to know was in post 2. No caveats.

A/C is a significant load. Dome light is not of any consequence, even more so if you have changed it to LED (like you should have ;-)

Certainly it will still "learn" parameters but not at the correct starting point. The correct starting point is no extra mechanical load (which incorporates "electrical load") other than that needed to idle the engine.

All this user manual and workshop manual concern of load on the engine seems odd when they state the learning procedure should be carried out at normal operating temperature. There is a very good chance one of the radiator fans will come on during the 10 minutes. That will be a significant load, especially with some of the older fans that draw even more current than "normal."

Not as simple as it sounds, also u need to get the car to normal operation temp per manual(not in post 2). So what sounds ridiculously simple really isn't if you want to do it correctly. My first minor issue was starting from cold, then I realized my running lights had been on. Next time I'm going to take it for a spirited run, come home, turn everything OFF, then start per instruction.

As a side note I've had 95's in my collection for over a decade and NEVER done this once, and they always seemed to operate fine after battery knob turned off.

Thank you for your input everyone.

Right, Andrew. And so have I with my M5.2 550 which has a slightly more involved re-learning procedure. But that's what the OM and WSM say. The 550 somehow learns what it needs to know and runs just fine. I understand the M7.1.1 M575M procedure is even more complicated! But as John mentioned, "Everything you needed to know was in post 2. No caveats."

In the case of my Challenge car, the radiator fans are operated manually. The car is left to idle for about ten minutes after battery reconnection with the fans off. I turn the fans on when I pit out onto the track. That procedure is followed when the car is first started in the morning and after each refueling during the track day when the battery is cut off.

I really appreciat everyone's input but the only caveat was the car needs to be at operating temp - and as 355's owners we all know that takes awhile :).

    Thank you everyone.

Thanks John - but it was a "caveat".

"Steady water temperature" could only be achieved via a car warmed up.

Thanks for helping, and an apology for the frustration.
