I inserted a sampling of 6 repro keys into my 308 last night. All fit in cleanly. I then used a caliper to measure the repro keys against my original Neiman key and all were close enough that the differences could easily be explained by wear.

Here are a series of measurements I took -- orig Neiman vs repro. As you can see they are very close. Would be even closer if my original was uncut and unworn. All measurements in mm.

When viewed from "Made in Germany" side w blade facing to right.

    Thickness: Neiman @ 1.78, repro @ 1.82
    Width: Neiman @ 7.22, repro @ 7.33
    Upper cut thickness: Neiman @ .89, repro @ .99
    Upper cut width: Neiman @ 1.66, repro @ 1.66
    Lower cut thickness: Neiman @ .76, repro @ .93
Lower cut width: Neiman @ 2.69, repro 2.55

Bit of a mystery since there have been no complaints re fit until now and my measurements of original Neiman to repro keys are so close.

Ron, if the width of a cut/groove is the only problem, any locksmith with a key cutting machine should be able to adjust that in a snap.

    Thanks...Jim

The other Neiman repro blank just arrived and I suspect it will insert into the ignition given its groove width. I'll visit my Dino in storage tomorrow or this weekend to confirm before having it cut. If it works, then I'll try to have your Neiman repros groove widened (but only one at a time in case that doesn't fix it!). By the way, my micrometer is .001", not in mm.

Neiman Made In Germany groove width: 72 <<--- prime suspect
    - Taylor D67P: 78
    - Silca NE9A: 80
    - Ilco R61N: 84
** alternate Neiman repro: 81 <<--- within the range of the working keys

Neiman top side groove width: 8 <<--- very little variation, so not a factor
    - Taylor D67P: 8
    - Silca NE9A: 7
    - Ilco R61N: NA (cut included the little nob, so unable to measure)
    ** alternate Neiman repro: 8

Neiman blade thickness: 72 <<--- big diff from Taylor, but other working keys ~same as Neiman, so shouldn't be a factor
    - Taylor D67P: 67
    - Silca NE9A: 71
    - Ilco R61N: 71
    ** alternate Neiman repro: 71

Neiman Made In Germany groove depth: ~38 <<--- big variation among the group, so maybe suspect #2?
    - Taylor D67P: ~28
    - Silca NE9A: ~30
    - Ilco R61N: ~34
** alternate Neiman repro: ~32 <<--- within the range of the working keys

Neiman top side groove depth: ~28 <<---pretty big variation within the group, but Neiman is inside the range of the others, so not a suspect
    - Taylor D67P: ~30
    - Silca NE9A: ~25
    - Ilco R61N: ~35
    ** alternate Neiman repro: ~28

Perhaps the 206/246 ignition of a particular period are indeed different from the 208/308 even if they looked extremely close to each other?

    I don't know, just a guess.

It's sure that no 308 owner reported a problem so far. There were a few 246 owners who got this repro as well and all went well too.

    I'm out of ideas now.

The Neiman repros, after the slightest of groove widening, work just fine now. The other Neiman repro I acquired slid easily into the ignition as expected.

    All is good now!

Glad that it worked out after all. But I'm still curious about the differences...

    Anyway.

The cut Neiman repros also had the slightest of burrs (since removed), which perhaps combined with the much narrower groove than the other keys contributed to the issue encountered. I'm just surprised how much variance there was between all the different keys. But I guess that's what allows for wider compatibility for different vehicles.

Thank you so much for your assistance. Now I just need to wait for the Torino SAFE door key repros.

The Neiman 68 ignition was used on many cars of that era. A replacement might had happened I guess.

Glad this worked out. Have to assume it was the initial cut by the locksmith that set things wrong. There have been no reports of ill fit before or since. All of your Dino test fits with the i-velocita repro key occurred after the keys were cut. Also, I measured the top side cut width of the i-velocita repro vs an original Neiman and both measured exactly 1.66mm.
