Spider for me. Nothing like a top down ride on a beautiful day. Hanging on to my 430 because of the engine glass, wish they'd do that with the new ones.

    Coupe for me

Mainly because of the flow of the roofline and engine in display.

Best option would be a glass roofed Targa.. ..nlw there's a thought....

I love both, but I prefer to hear the engine than see it, especially since the 458 and 488 engines don't look as good through the glass as the F430. Spider with rear glass down when roof is on, and roof off when blasting through the hills or along the esplanade in good weather ... can't beat it! If I only wanted it for track times, coupe but then I wouldn't be going 10/10 anyway seeing we can't get insurance for track days

Spider. You can see the mountains and smell the flora. And you can hear the engine music so much better. Keeping the engine window clean is a real pain on the 458 and 488 coupes.

Would rather hear the engine than see it too. Solution: take a picture of the engine and attach it to the dash. Then you can look at and hear the engine music simultaneously while driving a spider. ;)

The market has spoken. Spiders command higher resale values.

Coupe because of the superior structural rigidity + seeing the engine is nice too.

Only because they cost more to begin with. Also, since when does "the market" know the first thing about engineering?

My point is people are willing to pay more for a spider. They must think it's worth it. I do.

It's probably one of the hardest questions an owner faces when buying a Ferrari!

I love both. The Spider allows you to be exposed to the elements, whereas I feel the Italia has smoother lines and a higher top speed.

However, I went for the Italia because I'm a sucker for that full on look at me engine bay on display, and because it's the better performing and handling car (vs the Spider). Not that the Spider is uncomfortable or has too much cowl shake, but a Spider, any Spider, because of physics, won't have an equal or superior performance and/or handling to a coupe.

Having chosen the Italia (coupe), it can't be taken as a rule. Some models I like best as Spiders, others as coupes. I agree with what has been said: In all things 458 I prefer the Italia, but with the 488 I'd probably go for a Spider.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

I've had both and it depends on the model of ferrari for me. The Scud I loved as a coupe for the rigid driving. The 458SA was just so beautiful that it didn't matter if there was a bit of cowl shake....everything else was sublime.

What can be better than the world best sounded car, which is the Ferrari ?
Of course, a Ferrari with open top !!! Cowl shake ? Come on.... who's care ?

An open top Ferrari is more special for me, like if you can go around a track less than 1,2 seconds with a coupe.

    Spider for president ! :)

I love my Lotus but sure wish it had at the very least a Targa top. Yes its more ridged yadda yadda yadda. Here in Vegas there is about 9 months that would be great convertible weather. All my cars are coupes with the exception of the Jeep, its time for a convertible exotic. With Ferrari's I have only been looking at Spiders. Came close to buying 430 spider yesterday, hopefully soon!

In the new market, Ferrari customer base pays whatever Ferrari tells them to pay.

In the second hand market, a different phenomenon. 355 coupes are generally worth more than spiders. 360 spiders are worth right around the same as hardtops, maybe less. Same goes for 430. So in the second hand, values are about the same despite having a much higher Msrp, which means spiders have dropped significantly more.

Only with the 458+ (no more cloth top spiders) has the depreciation evened out between spider and hardtop.

The only way to know which is truely more popular is to offer both at the same msrp and see which one sold more. If the roles were reversed, i am sure there would be a segment of the market equal to current demand for spiders, where clients are willing to pay more for a hardtop over a spider if Ferrari commanded a higher msrp for a hardtop. The reason they could use for higher msrp? --- purer sports car engineering. Less weaknesses.

I've been curious how much cowl shake or flexing the spider exhibits, some seem to think it's very pronounced and for others it seems not to be a non factor. It's interesting to me that there can be such divergence in opinions. Maybe it comes down to the quality of the roads traveled.

I would never buy a convertible anything. I grew up in the M3 and 911 crowd where convertibles are shunned as poser cars and it stuck with me.

I prefer the coupe for the 458. Engine on display.

A lot of people say you only notice on track. I have had spiders from 355 to 4360 and driven 458 spider. On even slightly bumpy roads at 50-60mph, they wobble like jelly. Haven't tried the 488 but they tell me it's better.

GTB for me way better lines than the Spider with the roof up, which is most of the time if you live in the UK....and you get to see the engine
