I have been really into watching high end car auctions the past few years, but one thing that really bothers me is the way the Mecum auctioneers talk. I read there there is a psychological reason for the way they rythmically chant fast. Supposedly it lulls people into bidding and moves the auction along faster. But After about 30 seconds of listening to those guys babble away I have to mute the tv. How the hell do people stand sitting in there for hours on end? RM Sothebys, Gooding & Co, and Bonhams all seem to be able to move high dollar cars while talking in a normal tone of voice. Why the hell does Mecum need ruin the experience of the auction by talking like a bunch of babbling, incoherent idiots?

Exactly. Barrett-Jackson is guilty of the same audible abuse.

And combined with the liquid libations provided to the individuals in order to "enhance" their excitement for the show; it helps in driving up the bidding prices and process.

Except none of the european auction houses seem to do any of that. And they have no problem selling their cars. Meanwhile I'm watching the Mecum auction on mute and they are struggling to sell half their cars.

Europeans come from a tradition of selling art - slow and "genteel". Americans from selling horses & cattle, "Head 'em up, head em out, rawhide!"

I've found BJ & Mecum easier to 'tune out' in person than on TV.

Just as noise and libations increases the odds of hooking up in a disco.

It's not till the next morning before one says..."What have I done!"

Mecum and Barett Jackson are for cattle. Terrible venue. No class at all. Total chaos on the stage.

It's old pig and tobacco auctioneering.

    It's an American embarrassment.

And it is why I haven't gone to an auction with cash in hand yet. I don't want to be treated like that.

I've been tuned into RMS and Gooding. Mecum aaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhh! My ears! My brain!

Who is "lady Ross" at the Gooding auctions? Someone taking bids for bidders? I always picture some aristocrat lady bidder buying up all the cars that don't otherwise get bids? :D

Gooding is really easy and pleasant to watch with the sound on. All the stuff in the US, I prefer sound off.

Hey, you have your auctions in the land of wine and brie, and you can do what you wanna do. This is the USA. We're loud. We're brass. We're ugly, and we don't care. If you don't want to buy, don't. :)

It shows. Looking at Mecum's results page, looks like they only sold about 40% of their inventory which is really embarrassing. Maybe they will realize no one actually wants to listen to their annoying auctions and change their format to something people will actually want to come to.

One of the most entertaining days of my life was attending a Mecum auction in person. Those guys get a rhythm going, it's mesmerizing. I really enjoy it.

Lady Ross is Charlie Ross' wife - the auctioneer at Gooding. I believe Lady Ross (amongst others at Gooding) handle phone bids during the auction.

It's all about the cars. If Mecum had the cars, no one would care about the auctioneers.

Mecum is a 100% disgrace for exotics. They'd better sell hotdogs.
