Once in a while, my starter won't turn over due to heat is what I am suspecting. Was there ever a fix for this? Turn the key to start when the engine is hot and I hear click, click but won't turn over. Wait a while when it cools down and it starts up fine. In a jam once since I suspected the starter getting hot, I put a facecloth on the starter and poured cold water on it. Waited a few minutes and it started. So is there a solution for this or a good thread somewhere?

3 schools of thought... install a relay to the solenoid to force raw battery power to the solenoid and force it to engage, replace the solenoid, or clean the plug below the expansion tank. Lots have been written here about all three options. Feel free to search.

I don't recall the 512TR having the same plug in the LR corner like a testarossa has, not even the same starter. If your starter is acting up hot then rebuild it or replace it like you would any other car.

There was a post about honing out the solenoid someone did a write up on. seem like it made sense and was a good fix, any insight on that tactic?

I think there have been multiple solutions -

    1) Solenoid
    2) Honing the chamber to create a little more room - so the cylinder wouldn't get stuck. I think Steve(from Washington) did a write up on his website. I'll have to search for it. https://www.stevejenkins.com/blog/2015/07/diy-fix-a-ferrari-testarossa-512-tr-hot-start-problem/
    3) I think JIMBO installed a relay switch / button. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/boxers-tr-m/494699-how-i-installed-starter-button-512tr.html

I've tried #1, and #2 - and still encountered the issue once in a while. Let us know if you ever find a definitive fix.

Good to see you here again Adam.

I remember Steve Jenkins doing the write up.

I took apart my 308 starter this past week. After seeing how the solenoid works, it would make perfect sense that a light hone would solve a sticking problem. it is metal sliding on metal and corrosion and heat over time will slow the solenoid down.

I am willing to bet you can also buy a new solenoid (I did for my 308) ....I think from maniac electric.

It's coming with the years Tim .... dust and dirt ... just remove that by honing is perfect solution imo ...

    Hi
A bit late replying but I had this infuriating issue and resolved it quite simply (in the end)
In the first instance I thought the solenoid was sticking so I machined 10 thou off the piston ( a spare)
Helped a bit but no luck. As a professional electro technical engineer this was a challenge now !

In the end I discovered that the bendix drive was prone to collecting dust from the clutch.
This made it stick on the shaft rather than slide freely
    The cure
Drop the starter off - probably the easiest operation of any car.
Open it up and wash the bendix drive through with a bit of petrol ( for instance) or solvent
    Lots of muck comes out.
Run a tiny bit of light oil or moly slip type of product for lubrication of the shaft
(Not too much as dust sticks to the excess)
Move it up and down a few times to distribute the lubricant and reassemble.
    A 30 min job
    Repeat about every two years.

Apologies to those dealers who had a career from this issue

    Martin

Does this issue occur on TR’s or just 512’s?

Nice find and writeup Martin. My mechanic has just installed a new relay - and says it's a lot better. If it doesn't fix the issue - then I will go that route.

I had this issue. Originally, the Shop where I take the car (Cantech in Syracuse, NY) rebuilt the starter and installed a new Bosch solenoid, but I still had two occurrences over a five month period in the Summer of 2018. So, I mentioned it to the Shop Owner when I left the car off for storage in the Fall of 2018. They performed the following work over the winter, at no charge, which has solved the problem:

Just a follow up. I ended up buying a new started and it did the same thing. I there's something else going on with my car and suspect it's a relay issue. I jump started my started after driving when I couldn't get it to turn over. So I know it's not the started.

I fixed mine by putting in the relay. I tried cleaning the starter a few times, even screwed around with the white wires on the fuse box. Since the relay I haven't had an issue with heat soak on the starter at all.
