I have a small leak dripping off the bolts on the pumpkin. The fluid is clear. Would it be hydraulic fluid for the clutch? What would be probable cause?…thanks in advance Image Unavailable, Please Login

Could be clutch fluid (likely) or flywheel grease.

Might be throw out bearing seals

Do you think I could get the rest of the driving season out of it before I repair it

Likely it wont hurt anything for now but that is a straight out guess because anything could happen.

Why not just take it apart, not too difficult and have a look, then you can tell us if it will make it the rest of the season.

This way you can see it is not anything major.

Well, you are in the NE so we don't have more than 6-8 weeks at best left, so likely yes. I'm Assuming this is a gated car? If so, check the brake fluid level (non F1 share the same resivior for brake and clutch)

Either a leaky throwout bearing, leaking triple seals, or both. You'll have to remove the clutch bellhousing to inspect, and see for sure what it is.

I wouldn't recommend continuing to drive around under the circumstances. Diagnosis is as stated above, and not a particularly difficult repair ( there are numerous threads and videos on DIY repair and the parts are cheap). As I recall, I believe the pipe coming off the brake fluid reservoir for the clutch is high up, so it doesn't take much of a leak on a longish drive to get air into the line and then you're stuck. For 3 or 4 hours work and $150 or less worth of seals and fluid not worth the risk.

Plus if it is the triple seals (which would be a good idea to do while you're in there), more leakage just leads to having to do a flywheel service.

welcome to the throw out bearing leak. If your TO bearing needs replacement, it is not a cheap part.

As long as it's only a few drips and you keep an eye on the level, you will be ok until the crap weather comes.

I agree if its a few drips and only when hot likely not ahuge problem but then keep a close eye on it.

Easy way to tell fluids apart, is one mixes with water ie brake fluid, one doesnt ie gearbox oil.
both will start to contaminate your flywheel grease as some will travel down the shaft and into dual mass system when driven. Oil will also contaminate yoru clutch plate and it doesnt come out.
So I always suggest sooner rather than later.

You know, I think Eurospares sells triple seals that are Viton now. The seal is pliable, and does not need the heat and shrink and wait method the crazy Ferrari engineers designed in. What a design ! I can see it now. Hey it is leaking, and one seal is not enough, how about three! Si, that is going to do it.

Easier way than that - one is black and very stinky (gear oil), one is clear/orangey and a little bit sticky (especially when dry) and almost scent-less (brake/clutch fluid)
