Greetings from Ascona Ticino Italian speaking part of Switzerland on lake Maggiore where I am judging cars for Bonhams at a very nice and friendly concours. Staying in a wonderful boutique hotel with incredible views and this one has been parked all weekend out front, not moved an inch, a loaner car from a Zurich dealer...I wonder if it is the transportation for the couple in the room next door to ours who indulge in very audible lengthy bedroom gymnastics...but what else would take precedence, make you snub a Maserati:)?! I really enjoyed driving several Levantes in a public relations day near Geneva back in June.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Maserati is in an unhappy situation: when Maserati sells more than 10,000 units per year in Europe they will loose the niche player status. This has consequences on the legal requirements to be fulfilled (keyword "fleet fuel consumption", of which they are far away). Day registrations outside Europe could be a temporary "solution"...

I Want to like it but it looks like a Nissan. How can a company that designed such a gorgeous car with flowing lines as the Granturismo not come with something more original?

It's been awhile since they released the one two gorgeous knockouts that were the QPV and the Granturismo. The Levante doesn't bother me it looked very nice when saw it a couple years ago. Perhaps a bit fragile looking inside for an SUV ? I hope the buttons don't melt so many Ferrari & Maserati products did.

Porsche/VAG do the same, the Cayenne is a revised Touareg and the Macan an Audi Q5. Jaguar does it with the F pace. And Mercedes, BMW and Audi share just about anything througout their line-up.

Maserati has to, if they want to compete with their rel. small production numbers, they can't build a new platform for every model. Besides the Stelvio does seem to have a decent platform.

It's similar as the diesel discussion. Purist may not like it, but it pays the bills.

Agree. The Giorgio platform is excellent. Developed by the "skunkworks " under leadership of Streiff who was responsible for the Speciale....

Marchionne needs to stop hanging out in Auburn Hills, This is Chrysler mentality (or Sloanism)it is not well thought out and will actually take sales from Alfa. A better move would be to drop Maserati’s 345 HP V6 into the Stelvio and slot it in between the Ti and Quad. (There’s a big gap there).

Maserati would be better served building a larger version of the Levante on the Quattroporte platform (btw the next generation QP/Ghibli etc will be built on a modified Giorgio platform). The only real competition in that size is range is Land Rover, MB and maybe the Q7.

I drove the petrol Levante S this week, having driven the diesel a few weeks ago. Both cars are impressive, slightly smaller than Range sport, but very sporty and very expensive feeling inside. I was impressed by the diesel but, as a diesel, i had to admit, I wouldn't have one as I am one of the few staunch petrol heads that won't accept diesel in a maser, Bentley, lambo or ferrari. The petrol was a very very very nice car, and its fast as you need. I think low down, it's actually quicker, or at least as quick, as my rangie sport supercharged, certainly feels it, and the car is lower with a decent centre of gravity, and it feels more sporty. The handling is very good for such a heavy car, and I found it gave you immediate confidence if you come from fast cars into it, which it has to be said, you have to build in other fast SUVs, rangie, merc 63, M badges included.

Apart from the overall size for luggage carrying, I'd have one in a New York minute, the badge means something to me, it's different, and the equipment levels are great. The petrol is the engine it needed to make the car in my opinion, it's a proper maserati and you don't give much away to have a four wheel drive luxury sporting car.

I was at the ferrari dealership obviously, and they had no clues from ferrari yet about the SUV, but my opinion is that if they do one, it has to be a very special, very different SUV to anything else on offer. Maybe they should even badge them differently, like the Dino brand, maybe the 'Enzo' brand, or 'Piero' or something?, separate from the Ferrari brand. That said, we all know, they will sell out and have a three year waiting list, because all of us nutters will want a ferrari SUV if we want an SUV, why have anything else? Haha
