Well, none of you guys would buy this old bucket of bolts, so, on Hemmings now:...
you didn't advertise it with the provenance of having been driven by me. that's like better than Clasiche certified.
Advice, see-vu-play. I've had no luck with selling my car here or my ad in Hemmings. https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/ferrari/246gt/2001904.html I'm thinking of taking the car to auction in the spring at Amelia Island. What auction house do you think would be the best bet for a Dino? Thanks!
It depends how badly you want to sell it. A run on here and Hemmings isn't tons of exposure, but an auction house has ups and downs. You could spend $5K to get the car there, it no sales, and then is "the Dino" that didn't sell...Or it does sell, at a lower than wanted price, and THEN they take their 10% too :/ My advice, come up with a bottom dollar number you have in mind, and start calling around. Call some dealers, overseas too, and get a "feel" for the market.
A car like this will take some time to sell. Assuming the car is as good as represented, someone will come along, do their due-diligence, and pull the trigger on your nice car. The only issue is, how long does that take. My guess is probably 6-8 months, assuming the car is priced market correct. There's just not a ton of people itching to spend north of $300k on a car. Those that are, have plenty to be choosy about. Additionally, if someone is ready to spend that kind of money on a top notch 246, they may feel more comfortable working with a reputable dealer or broker rather than buy from an uknown individual. The reality is, as an individual, you'll get wholesale for the car, whether you sell it to a dealer, consign it, or run it through an auction. That's just the way it's going to work. Dealers won't be crazy about buying it because that's a lot of coin to tie up in a car that really rides the ups and downs of the car market seemingly more so than most Ferraris. You can have a bad day at the auction, too. I'd recommend doing some research and finding a reputable broker who can market your car and get you a fair price. I just think that from beginning to end you're looking at 6-12 months.
Have you put it on EBay for more exposure ? I sold two alfas and a 930T last Fall using Fchat, eBay, alfabb, and rennlist. It can be done, but you must be realistic on current values. I'm not saying anything about your particular asking price, just saying in general. And you MUST keep bumping your ads to the top as much as allowed.
Seats are all full leather, replacements for re-originals including frames, done 5/2004 Carpets were from World Upholstery same time door panels and rear panel are leather as well, done same time. Dash material was sourced from Dennis McCann, maybe a year later. Geez, how do I know all this stuff . . . D
If you do decide to take it to an auction it is important to choose the best venue as that will make a big difference . Also pay attention to the release criteria for post auction sales some auctions release you immediately and others hold you for up to 90 days maybe more. I recommend that you make a nice brochure and include your phone number .. the more details the better price you will get it would also be good to get a fresh service prior to an auction showing the car is up to date.... you could find very nice results...
Saw that there was another red, 1972 246 on Hemmings that looks scruffy, hasn't been run in 20 years, and is only priced about 10% lower than yours. Ad for that one doesn't even list miles... Sure know which I'd grab, if I had the $$$! Good luck with the sale (or, auction, if it comes to that)!
Woke up in a cold sweat last night. I can't sell this car. What a mistake that would have been. So, off the market, hopefully to be mine, to have and to hold, until death us do part.
Ha! That's so awesome. I feel that way about my 360 gated spider, actually had a dream where someone bought it and it was gone and I was very upset. I live in San Antonio, Texas where Sandra West was buried at Alamo Masonic Cemetery with "the seats slated comfortably" in her 1964 Powder Blue 250GT. I would sell my car if I really had to but other than fiscal distress I plan to keep her till I can't drive anymore Image Unavailable, Please Login . Congrats on making the wise decision!
I have been thru this - car needs to go and all into selling Then a few days later go to my garage with my dog to have a shot of bourbon and think "what was I thinking about" Image Unavailable, Please Login
