Changing the battery on the 458

just out of curiosity, what does a dealer charge to replace the battery (in the USA)? thank you

 

I changed my own as well. Just take your time and follow Mel's instructions.
The more work you do on your own, the more you will know about your car, which comes in handy if there is ever a problem.

 

yes that is fair enough. However, I think it is worthwhile to understand what the alternative would be. Batteries are a commodity and Amazon sells the one that seems to fit for approx. $263 (not the Ferrari OEM branded one). I would think a dealer would charge 1/2 hour to 1 hour labor to install it. So I would suspect you are all in somewhere between $400 and $450. would that be a reasonable estimate?

PS: my concern is not so much about doing the work myself, but rather the unintended consequence of screwing up some of the electronics....

 

Good question; I have no idea what the dealer charges. I bought my battery at the dealer and it was about $260, so I think your estimate is good.
I bought it at the dealer in case I had any questions when installing it.

 

Amazing timing for this thread. My battery is shot. I was just about to post asking about how to do it yourself and found this. So what battery is recommended as a good replacement and is there a main shut off switch like the 430 had in front trunk? Also is there a relearn procedure?

 

Please note that low battery voltage will cause a myriad of faults to be stored in many of the ECU's in the car's electronic system. After battery replacement you need have someone with a diagnostic computer clear all of these faults. They won't cause a problem if they are left there, but if your car does have some kind of issue later on it will be very difficult to diagnose.
These cars are difficult enough to diagnose electrical issues on and not clearing the old faults will make it even harder.

 

Yes. A friend of mine has one of those diagnostic computers that will reset the faults for me. Thanks!

Installing a battery is so simple ... it's like in any car .... would you do it in your Ford ?

Do it then also now yourself !

Don't buy the (red) oem (thin plates) battery, it is 4 times the price of any normal 74 Amps battery (black one).

Did you do anything to reset the computer? or just straight swap?

 

Straight swap. Then you use the carkey and close and open ...

t is describerd some where .. (owners manual ? )

 

Codes have to be cleared. That's about it.

Click on Melvok's Yolo link for pics.
It's basically open the battery compartment cover in passenger footwell. Two hex screws on bottom of battery tray, remove them and pull out that bracket. Battery then will slide out enough to get to the pos and neg terminals. Neg is a quick release. Remove old battery and insert new one. Install bottom bracket and your done.

Only thing now is my hood release button not working. I have to manually open it now. Any idea why?

 

The door lock system needs to be initialized. Lock and unlock the car with the remote. The hood release button should now work properly.

Here is the battery disconnect/connect procedure in case any one wants it. Although it is in the owners manual, I found that they talk about it in a couple different sections. I went through and organized everything and then confirmed with my mechanic at the local Ferrari dealer.

Disconnect Procedure:

- Roll windows down at least 2-3cm or more (this is so you can either close or open either door if needed after the power is off)
- Make sure that consumers are turned off (i.e. windshield wipers, lights, etc.)
- Turn A/C off
- Remove battery

Connect and Relearn Procedure:

- Temperature should be above 41 degrees F
- Connect battery
- Before starting engine make sure all doors are closed (i.e. engine compartment, luggage compartment)
- Close doors and leave vehicle alone for at least one (1) minute
- Do not switch on any consumers during this period
- After one (1) minute or so, lock/unlock doors with remote
- Open the luggage compartment lid by pressing button twice on remote
- Insert key in ignition and turn to position II and WAIT AT LEAST ONE (1) MINUTE before starting engine
- Start engine
- Leave the engine stationary for approximately 10 mins in the following conditions:
- Engine at idle speed
- water temperature stabilized
- consumers turned off (lights, windshield wipers, etc.)
- A/C off
- Close door and raise the door windows to the upper limit and then lower windows. Raise them again and check that they move down to the target position when doors are opened.
- Set date and time on the instrument panel.

As I said, this is a compilation of the instructions in the owners manual. Hopefully this will help everyone.

In my owner's manual it states:
"Warning: the battery may only be removed by Ferrari customer service"
Does this mean that one can lose the factory guarantee if done one's self?

 

Hi If you do. Not want any Problems ,than before disconnecting battery take a 12volt Charger and give it to the cable of the Pols + and -
Than you disconnect your dead battery and the 12v is allready on your car!!!!!
So you have nothing to do If you install the new one.because no voltage interruption
