Interesting. Aston is a long way from F1 tech levels. Even in road cars their V12 HP isn't close to Ferrari V12.

It will probably end up being a Cosworth engine badged as Aston-Martin.

How delusional is AM to think they have the resource or capability to possibly compete against Merc, Ferrari and Renault in F1. Even a company like Honda couldn't get it done. Heck they even buy road car engines from Merc now!

Mercedes owns 15 pc of Aston, provides some engines, and soon some platforms will be common too.
So, there is a possible conflict of interest for Aston to enter F1.

Daimler and Renault own 3% of each other. They also share suppliers and at least one vehicle.

That would be incredibly expensive for AM to commission Cosworth to do that for them as they'd have to start from complete scratch and get more staff and tooling to make something. They've been out of the F1 game for a while so whatever the next iteration engine there is, it will probably overlap with the current tech.

I doubt anyone new apart from Porsche would stand a chance coming into this now. The next engines will be closely related to the current ones; they're even talking about keeping mgu-h now. If Honda had it bad enough coming in slightly late, no else possibly could at this point. Let alone Cosworth who struggled with the V8's.

They could get rid of mgu-h if they wanted to now, for the sake of containing development costs. No mgh-h = significant knock-on effect everything else in the PU. So we'll continue with the same thing into the 'new engine formula.'

There's a lot of cross-pollination in the car business. So conflicts of interest don't really exist on the F1 level.

For years Aston was broke. If it tries formula 1 it will be broke again.

Getting rid of MUG-H would mean the complete top ends of the "motor" would have to be rethought.
Right now, the MUG-H prevents overboost, and supplies power when the engine is "in band".
I really can't see the powers behind the engine people wanting to step back from technology that is just about ready to bleed back into street cars.

Hope next engines aren’t so easy to build anyone and their dogs could build a competitive one.

From what I’ve read so far on the discussions, I don’t see any meaningful change from the current setup. At this point, I’d happily take more fuel capacity, unrestricted flow rates, and a 17k rev limit.

Can't see Aston doing it really, they'd more likely brand a car, such as a red bull, in partnership with red bull getting Mercedes engines, helping keep dieter happy. Imagine the red bull with the Mercedes in it, it'd be a match for the works team pretty darn quickly even if they don't give them the specialist engine maps! Crikey, doesn't bear thinking about

That said, marmorini at Aston must be doing something, he is an engine guy only, but maybe they are looking into bringing their road cars up to supercar engine status to be closer to ferrari in performance as well as price?

I don't want to think about that. RB with a MB engine will push Ferrari further down the grid. :(

Depends if they plan to stay in the game as a works team much longer, the smart money says Mercedes will withdraw their works effort 2021

I, for one, am looking forward to AM joining F-1. It is good for the sport.
