Liverty wants to change the starting Grid to 3-2-3 system

According Marca, Liverty is looking to change the starting grid to a 3-2-3-2-3......... as it was in the early years of F1 to produce more excitement in the start of the races. The only place that could not apply is in Monaco because the starting straight is very narrow.

I just about this is in the other thread. They can't make it through T1 now. It almost sounds as if crashing is an exciting part of F1. Its not for me. Like hockey, I don't want to see fights... I want great stick play. In F1, I want to see racing of the highest caliber. There's no joy for me at all to see carbon flying off the car of my favorite drivers or them being forced off or run into by some over ambitious upstart bombing the inside with no hope of holding the line. Actually that is the worst thing to me currently going on. When Seb or Lewis or any top driver's race ends in 30 seconds or less, it's a shame for the fans. I don't want to see turn 1 accidents anymore than I want to see grid penalties. What a stupid and insulting thing for fans to endure. Putting top drivers mid-pack or in the back because in the prior race some idiot rammed into them and broke their gearbox is a total **** punch to the fans. That's a disgrace.

Please you read the entire text before giving your opinion, I take the trouble to clarify that it would not apply in Monaco

 

F1 and WEC are two motorsports that would not in any way benefit from more crashing. For the most part the start is already the most exciting part of the day right behind Qually. Why are they wanting to mess around with that?

 

Terrible idea. These guys can't handle 2-wide starts as it is.

 

If they go 3-abreast, they better bring back the T-cars.

 

They'll need two or three t-cars with the low standard of anticipation and awareness demonstrated by the likes of Ericcson, Perez, Maxine, and a few others that tend to find pulling away at the start far too much to cope with, wherever they start on the grid

 

Last time we saw a 3 abreast car run down to T1 was Singapore. That didn't go well...

 

I like the idea on tracks of a certain width.

If it's not wide enough (like Monaco) then it stays 2.

It's about time F1 thought outside the box.

It sounds very tight but if the three cars are standing next to each other it also has an advantage: they see each other
I think with the current offset line-up the pole sitter does not see the second in the mirror (just a guess) when they start. So the one in front only can guess where the other is until he is next to him...Imagine the Singapore start with Max, Seb and Kimi next to each other would have most likely worked better because neither Seb nore Max actually saw Kimi from their point of view. Starting next to each other they would have most likely just took the corner in the order Kimi, Max and Seb and nothing would have happened...

 

I would like to see them try it out for a few races and see how it goes. If it works better then great! If not go back to 2x2 starting.

 

It's only an advantage to those that can't make pole, so they jus aim for top three, not so sure it's fair to make people fight over pole, and then take away the advantage they've earned. It also means that typically, they will still arrive at turn one to go thru in order, except that fourth and fifth will be that much closer, effectively a concertina into the first corner where third might end up fifth by default..... rather than changing parts that actually work, they should be looking at allowing development and the use of parts as and when necessary without grid penalties which is destroying races

 

Yes, the pole sitter might lose an advantage but it would be much better than reversed or random starting order as discussed here in the past. When the pole sitter is still on the best line for turn one he still has an advantage although this advantage is smaller than before. As someone said above: just give it a try, it should be easy to take back if it does not work....

 

I feel its only purpose is to get more first corner shunts. I like it!

 

Worth a try, though Ferrari* having a car that can really match a Merc, on a variety of tracks, is the only thing that will make it interesting for me.

*Maybe Red Bull too, but that's not where my heart is.

Hulkenberg gives thumbs-up to three-car grid rows plan


Nico Hulkenberg has given the thumbs up to plans to radically reform the F1 starting grid.

We reported earlier this week that Liberty Media is contemplating lining up the cars in two and three-car grid rows in the future.

"I heard about those rumours," Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg told Germany's Sport1.

"For me it would be perfectly fine and I don't think it would cause more accidents."

However, the German driver does think the alternating two and three-car row grids would be an issue at some circuits.

"In Monaco it would not be possible to put three cars side by side on a row because of the width of the track," Hulkenberg said.

"But the authorities will think about those issues after the season," he added.
