In 1998, Maserati introduced its new sporting coupé, the Maserati 3200 GT. It was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign company, to whom the marque had already entrusted the design of its Ghibli, Bora and Merak models. The 3200 GT was the first model entirely designed and developed after the manufacturer (known for its trident emblem) had been taken over by the Fiat Group. It received excellent reviews for its good looks as well as for the performance and driving pleasure it delivered, but its signature boomerang tail lights brought its career to an early end. They were not homologated for the North American market, meaning the car could not be exported there. It was therefore replaced in 2002 by a model closely based on the 3200
GT, but with improved performance and reliability, which brought Maserati renewed success.
The first Maserati to be equipped with a Ferrari engine, the 4200 GT or Coupé inherited the fiery 4244cc V8 from the Modena, producing 390bhp, which had also been installed in the Maserati
Spyder one year earlier. The car was tremendously successful and signalled the manufacturer's comeback on the American continent. To mark the occasion, Maserati decided to return to motorsport, and developed a considerably more powerful model to take part in the famous 24 Hours of Daytona race. Two Ferrari/
Maserati dealerships - from Washington and Houston - were selected to run the two cars. Far removed from the coupés competing in the Trofeo Maserati, the two Maserati Trofeo Light cars built by the factory were completely re-engineered.
The output of their engines was increased to 430bhp at 7000rpm; with a weight of 2590lb, they had a power-toweight ratio of 372bhp per ton. In accordance with the FIA-N-GT regulations, they were fitted with the Cambiocorsa transmission, new suspension, further improved aerodynamics and new, larger tyres. The results were clear for all to see: the Trofeo Light lapped the Fiorano test track five seconds faster than the standard Trofeo model! Six further cars were subsequently built to contest the Italian championship.
The car we are offering for sale is none other than the famous ‘Spirit of Houston' of the Risi Competizione team, which Anthony Lazzaro, Ralf Kelleners and Matteo Bobby drove home to 11th place in the GT class at the 24 Hours of Daytona race in 2004. Without incurring a single problem during the race, the car finished 26th overall, ahead of the Washington car (which came in 16th in the GT class and 37th overall). It is interesting to note that the Washington car continued to compete in the Grand-Am series, while the ‘Spirit of Houston' was shipped to Modena and remained at the factory until 2005, when its current owner acquired it during an auction organised at Ferrari's works.
A Maserati with an exceptional history, the ‘Spirit of Houston' is undoubtedly the most famous of the eight Trofeo Light models assembled. As well as its racing pedigree, its owner - a committed fan of the marque - likes to point out that BBR produced a 1/43 scale model of it, as did Maserati for its centenary, proof of its importance to the company.
The car has a clear history and is supplied with its certificate of authenticity and Maserati Classiche documentation, as well as the ‘Libro delle Corse' compiled by the factory. One last, but very important detail, it comes with its factory maintenance history and invoices. It should be noted that in 2008, Italtecnica - which built the cars for the factory - carried out a major service on the car, as part of which the engine was uprated from 430 to 456bhp. Its owner drove the car regularly at private events and meetings in honour of the marque, such as the first edition of Chantilly Arts et Elégance
Richard Mille in 2014, and took care to build up a significant stock of parts to ensure it will continue to run well. These will be transferred to the new owner and include spoilers, wheels, slicks and rain tyres, original exhausts, brake discs and more.
