Grease fitting would have saved my bearing. The grease in the bearing dried up and the bearing started to seize. Clutch hydraulics worked fine, it just made an awful noise.

As long as too much grease is not used this sounds like a great way to make a non-servicable part serviceable. The heat from the bearing's lack of grease could be cooking the seals.

I just put in a Hill unit in my car with no grease fitting 100 miles ago.

Not surprised. An independent is a better choice.

Yes, as above. The hose is not a pressurised hose, just a gravity/suction feed from the main fluid reservoir to the clutch master so no special parts needed, it just needs to be brake fluid resistant. In my case we simply routed the pipe a different way and rotated it through 180 degrees also.

See item #29 in the parts diagram here.......

Hello, this is just a final thought follow-through, reporting the long-term performance of this modification. I sold the car back in 2010, with 80k miles on it. The first thrust bearing seized from being grease starved at 17k miles, with my driving conditions. The second one, although much better in design and function, eventually failed, under slightly more harsh conditions, for the same reason at around 22k miles. The simple modification lasted, at least to 40k miles, because when I sold the car, it still had no hint of any noise or loss of performance. It worked for me and it could work for you too. Thanks to all for their comments and contributions.

Grease nipples are very underrated. Imagine if all our suspension ball joints had grease nipples. They would last forever too.
