As far as the cosmetics, I think that the front bumper and rear bumper will have a new look. Perhaps the wing mirrors too.
And then off course some new rims.

Say what? What are you talking about? Ferrari are making cars that are perfectly pitched for drivers. People who enjoy feeling the pace and the balance of a car, not just its laptime. The way they move over the road is so entertaining and willful - the Speciale has track pace but more importantly, rewards both the fast road driver and the track driver (I have driven it extensively on both). The 488 is also a superb fast road car, and goes well on track (again, driven thousands of miles in mine, both road and track). The F12 needs a little more commitmet on track but it is still fast, and makes a great hyper continent-crusher, with a wonderful V12 for company. Ferraris are the best at providing driver engagement at lower speeds as well as higher speeds. The RS can do this, but not as well as the Speciale.

I have just bought a 991 RS and it is brilliant. More sonorous than the V8 Ferraris and a fabulous drive. But the Speciale is more raw and more mobile at the rear, with amazing feel and balance in its chassis. The Speciale is one of the motoring world’s great accomplishments, as is the RS. I wouldn’t swap either for the McLaren I owned, great in its way but not with the personality of either of the Ferraris or the RS.

I have an FF too, with a Lusso coming. What underestimated cars. They are brilliant in their delivery of Ferrari excitement in a large, four seat, go anywhere package. What else compares? You cannot find another car anywhere in the market that has the same blend of attributes as these two prancing horses.

I have numerous Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren friends. Very few of them fit the description you suggest in your version of the modern Ferrari owner.

Well said, Lukeylikey. Our friend is suffering from rose-colored nostalgia, and mistaking improved quality / refinement for a lack of fun and driver engagement.

Interestingly, I recently test drove a gorgeous and lovingly maintained 1984 BBi. It was a shocking reminder of how much Ferraris have improved in 30 years. That car was not more “fun” than my F12, FF, or 488. This is the Golden Age of Motoring.

I have a brand new 2017 488 GTB. I also have a 1989 328 GTB. I love them both for very different reasons. The 328 represents something special to me. It was what Ferrari was to me when I was a teen. It took me years to find the precise one I wanted and it is amazing. It looks awesome, it smells unlike Ferrari's today, it sounds great. But, when I drive it and then I drive the 488 - the experience is beyond compare. The notion that the 488 isn't as much fun or somehow it is less thrilling is crazy. Now, that isn't to say one is more enjoyable than the other. But, I guess that's the point, they are both great.

I am pretty sure I have stated numerous times that a speciale may be the exception, its posibly the one mdoern f-car i do covet, although I hear the Cs was a far more viceral experience. But the issue with the speciale is that other than for a very favored few its not purchaseable. Ferrari instead forces customers who may have been drivers into their Gt cars ie regular 458, thats ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that as a result most speciale became resultingly instant collector cars and therefore barely driven.

Therin lays my issue with ferrari and why with rare exceptions serious divers just apply elsewhere.

And yes i do a gree the FF is great, the one origional car ferrari builds and I hear its excellent.

Funny I drove a 458, Mp12 and 997 Gt3 back to back with the BB 512 and found the opposite experience, ie how far things had slid in terms of engagement. To me the 997 Gt3 was infinitely more enjoybale to drive than the paddle cars, and it still had all the moderrn virtues.

Drove home in the BBi through the same 125 mph bend, in the paddle cars you might have been issuing instructions to a keyboard, in the 512 you had to think, brake, downshift at the right time ease in the power and then flatten the pedal off the apex. Same technicaly "insane" road speed, infintely more enaging and enjoyable. On backroads where the speeds are more like 60-100 the difference is even more marked.

the 997 Gt3 beutifully had the best of both, enaging at all speeds yet infintely capable, but you have to be into the whole porche thing and look.

You can currently purchase a Speciale at or slightly below MSRP. Or an FF for less than 1/2 of MSRP. No problems with accessibility, and you hardly have to be a tech billionaire or Wall Streeter, to use your words.

Or you can go enjoy your gorgeous Boxer and realize there are no right or wrong answers, just lots of blessings for all of us. Hope you can find peace.

Porsche does not make it easy to buy gt3 and even more so for the rs. Not that different than ferrari with cs, scud, speciale. Exclusivity is part of the package, unfortunately.

And speciales are now under msrp! Wow I had no idea that happened. Let me know when they reach 1/2 msrp and im in ; (

I believe folks enjoy the older cars because they feel a connection with their own past or Ferrari's past - or perhaps both. That is wonderful. However, a super car has just got to be super fast and the old cars are really just fun old cars that were really great in their day. I don't think working so hard to go a moderate speed is fun or engaging. I raced 2-strokes against 4-strokes and thought the 2-strokes were the better choice due to their engagement and demand for rider skill. Then I bought a modern 4-stroke and saw things much differently. Now the 2-stroke gets no seat time but the 4-stroke will scare the pants off you with its shear speed and traction. No need to work hard and go slow. Best is to have one or more of each but if you could only have one its the beast for sure.

As spidey said sign me up for the reaspnable priced speciale. Last I saw they were well over 400k. Also If I am going to buy a new ferrari model I want to buy a new one. I like to keep my cars.

Yeah been looking at FFs, they are not sportscars, but fun inclement weather cars and great for a DD.

Funny whenver I drive one of my cars I find great inner peace, which is part of the reason I like a great drive, it clears the mind..

maybe because on street we dont race.
Better to driver a slower car fast than a fast car slow. Holding back to use your terminology

(on road) its not how fast you go but how you go fast that counts.

Each car has a certain tempo on certain roads, think of it as water flowing smoothly over rocks.

For want of betetr terminology think of it as the art of quick road driving. Moderns miss too much at any semi sane road attainable speeds(ie between 50- 140). Well unless you live in Germany, South Africa or maybe the ME.
Even then there is no reason why moderns should not be fully engaging at 50mph on up. Thats why I was so impressed with the 997 Gt3 and so unimpressed with the mc12 and 458.
No arguement with their ultimate performance, its what they give up in between thats the issue, and it doesent have to be that way as the 997 Gt3 proved..
