Marchionne also said all future offerings from FCA's Maserati brand and Ferrari — which he spun off in 2015 but still leads — will be electrified, including all-electric models, beginning in 2019.

"We have to electrify," Marchionne said in October regarding the challenge of meeting European regulations. As for whether that represents the future of automaking, "the answer is 'no,'" he says. "I think it's too early to assume that by itself electrification will solve the [industry's] problems."

(Maybe the new 488VS will be a hybrid since it is due 2019 or so...)

I agree with his comment about whether it's the future (it's not). That being said, I can't really get to hopped up over electric Ferraris...the engine is a big part of what makes them so awesome.

I'm a relative newcomer to the marque, avid, but new all the same. I don't mind F1's, convertible hard tops, front engine V8's, etc. But I draw the line at electric. I want electric, I'll get a Tesla. I'm not getting a Tesla.

I dont think you guys get it. If ferrari still wants to sell cars, they must go electric or hybird. Many countires want the ice powered car gone by 2025. VAG group, Mercedes, volvo and a number of others are shifting focus to stay relivent. Ferrari is not different, and have no choice. It is what it is. Deal with it, or dont buy a new ferrari and let the company fail, all because you the buyer can't excpet change or progress.

It will not be in 2 years..we hope. But tech moves very fast. I give it at max 5 before we see an electric or hybird ferrari..oh wait..laferrari is already a hybird..never mind..

The title of the thread makes reference to all electric. Never gonna happen in less than 2 years for Ferrari / Maserati. You don't need to tell me about technology moving fast. I was an engineer at the largest engine factory in the world (GM). We were designing and building production equipment simultaneously while product design was ongoing.

What a brilliant plan to get rid of pesky customers like me, who spent almost a million dollars over the last 5 years on Ferrari and Maserati cars. Electric boosters is fine, but all electric is like peeing inside the keyhole of my front door, than ringing the doorbell and asking how far the beam went... it is 2000% reliable to alienate our relationship.. :-(

Good news is all our cars are going to stop depreciating!!!
I for one will not be buying an electric. I don't care how fast it accelerates. Acceleration isn't the only thing that makes me want a sports car... why do you think we put exhaust systems or side pipes on cars. What am I gonna put on a better sound system to fake better engine noises???

Ferrari must evolve or die. All eras end. You know the electrics will outperform their ICE forebears. I'm just happy to have lived in the era I do.

They may go up in value for a few short years, however, once electric takes over, i fear ice cars will not be allowed to operate on city streets anywhere. They will become simply toys which can only be driven in certain areas and on race tracks. It will become to much of an inconvenience to own one. That will drive the prices down. Not up.

Electric cars aren't the future: they're the past. They've been around for over a century in one guise or another, hyped or buried over a century according to the dominating trend and lobby. They never worked.

Electric cars aren't the nicest thing invented since sliced bread, no matter how much the media and Tesla's CEO try to advertise: where does electricity come from? What happens to batteries NOW (not speculating how wonderful it will be to fully recicle them theoretically in an all green fashion 100 years from now) when they end its life cycle? How much does it cost to manufacture one battery? How much pollution is involved? Under what conditions are they manufactured? If you think a Ferrari is expensive to maintain, what about a full replacement of a car's batteries/energy storage system? I could go on forever.

Hydrogen however pleases me: the most abundant element in the Universe that produces nothing more than clean water.

I will never ever buy an exotic supersports car that is electric or hybrid. As far as daily drivers go, I will refrain from buying anysuch car until manufacturers make me (that is, until there are only hybrid/electric cars in their offer). I will not buy an SUV, not even as a daily driver, as I personally don't like them: most of us like to sit farther up and that's why people buy them 99% of the time. They never leave town, the most radical thing they do is go over a speed hump, they're big, inefficient and it's a fashion statement. They're only useful if you live in the countryside and even so, I'd prefer to buy a 4x4 pickup truck than an SUV.

If Ferrari does decide to built nothing but SUVs, electric cars and hybrids, I'll go spend my money elsewhere. I couldn't worry less, and I'm sure Ferrari couldn't also care less about my decision and a few thousands more like me.

I will however stick to my petrol Ferraris. They will appreciate and even if they dipped in value, I wouldn't dream of selling, no matter how inconvenient future environmentalists laws will render them.

The smell of an italian naturally aspirated engine burning petrol will soon become a commodity. Some proper petrolheads won't surrender to this new pseudo-electric era and "progress". There's no replacement for a proper Ferrari burning proper fuel. There's no replacement for chocolate.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

It actually is: no shortage of non-hybrid super power in that price range, so you have to really want to have hybrid power or don't care about it to buy a LaFerrari. But it's a question of personal taste: it says more about me than the actual car or product.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Hydrogen is not green at all. In fact, its worse than petrol

Today they make hydrogen from natural gas. They break it down using electricity (created from either coal, natural gas, nuke, or hydro-electric). What they get is hydrogen and -- tah dah -- C02 (aka green house gas). That C02 is released into the atmosphere.

So, we use fossil fuels to make electricity to transform fossil fuels to hydrogen and green house gases that we turn back into electricity while releasing water and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Then we transport the gas by trucks using fossil fuels.

    Not green one little bit.

The goal is that "someday" they will be able to take electricity from ocean currents and then break down sea water into hydrogen in an economical manner but that may be decades away.

So, don't fool yourself that hydrogen is green. Its actually worse than fossil fuels for now and for the foreseeable future.

When you consider the sheer number of automobiles and light trucks sold each year:

    http://www.businessinsider.com/2016-was-a-record-breaking-year-for-global-car-sales-and-it-was-almost-entirely-driven-by-china-2017-1

and compare to prediction of EV cars over the next 20 years

    https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-ev-oil-crisis/

You can clearly see there will be zero ability to ban ICE vehicles in any meaningful way, there simply will not be sufficient numbers to replace the existing fleet

And, I think the projections are vastly overdone because there will be severe production supply chain issues due to rare earth minerals and, separately, Cobalt availability

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/29/electric-cars-battery-manufacturing-cobalt-mining

    So, fear not!

I wonder this as well, but I also think the electric car thing is a bit of a farce...
Electric Heat has NEVER been more efficient than gas.
These Electric cars require a charge which comes from Coal currently. Sure Solar Charging Banks are in the future like those coming out from Tesla, but the Batteries in the Cars and in these Energy Storage Banks are gonna start going bad just like your phone and laptop batteries do. Then we have the cost to replace and dispose these batteries. I believe we're going down a road that will terminate with a return to combustion engine cars. Either Nobody has the foresight to see this -or- they want to sell a billion Electric cars followed by a Billion Combustion engine cars in 10-20 years from now thus spurring the economy.

I for one will be driving my Gas Cars and just accepting the ticket each time, unless it gets ridiculously expensive to do so. Piss on your damn Electric Car!

You might be right on the low speed acceleration when electric has more torque until it its 45-50 mph, that is when the torque curve on most high-end combustion engine cars beats the "crap" out of electric. So, perhaps electric boost in the beginning, then a real engine.. that would optimize 0-100 mph performance and not just the boring 0-100 kph which most cars do fast anyway....

That’s what happened in the early 1900’s. A huge % of motoring enthusiasts don’t even know electric cars were popular.

Also advanced economies must make clean electricity for electric cars to make any sense.

The UK uses approx 10% coal, but the most advanced European economy, Germany uses 40% coal including lignite, the most polluting form.

Move to China and it’s close to 100% coal.

The most dangerous part of the mix is that politicians are under pressure to make cities clean. And they do very stupid things when under pressure; just look at diesel in the UK. They changed the whole market to diesel and now they are starting to ban diesels from cities, and penalise them tax wise, all within fifteen years. The UK politicians were fully aware of the particulates issue.
