I think it was Felipe Massa who said, for what this is worth, that the accounts of the Williams team has been in the red for about some weeks already. As I have already written, I'm afraid they have started a slide on the downward slope.
All taken into account, they should have kept Felipe on board for another year (but, admitedly, they would then have to face the same problem at the end of 2018).

Williams had 2 special requests for Massa's replacement

    1) he had to pay more money than Stroll
    2) he had to be slower than Stroll

"Sirotkin emerged as a late contender for the seat after Renault allowed him to test for Williams in the post-season Pirelli tyre test at Abu Dhabi alongside rival Robert Kubica and potential team-mate Lance Stroll.

The Russian was the slowest of the three drivers but he did not test on the new hypersoft tyres like Kubica and Stroll did."

Well, I've read the summary of the test in "Motorsport Magazine" (was it from Mark Hughes?) and his conclusion was that Williams changed the conditions/parameters so much between drivers that for the outsider observer, any conclusion was impossible, but from their point of view (through rouble-tinted glasses?) Sirotkin was faster than Kubica.

To be fair that's hard to find, someone with the necessary FIA points that is slower ;).

They got an as slow as possible teammate, who pays...The truly embarrassing thing is if Stroll doesn't beat him, meaning he'll be beaten by a rookie with an average record. And if they prove to be equals, their car will likely be driven by underperforming drivers. What if Sirotkin proves to have Strolls measure like Massa did? What does that say about Stroll?

I do hope that this doesn't backfire on Williams as I've my doubts how they'll come back from a big set back. It's tough in the lower end of the points and a missed result here or there can mean the difference of having 20 million less by the end of the season, if not more. If Stroll performs like he has in the last races, not scoring points when it was easily possible, I fear for the future of the team.

Robert it seems is out of the picture so the pecking order will change. Williams will become the "new" Sauber...and Sauber will move up to be the new Williams. And around mid-season (if not a little sooner) Toro Rosso and Honda will surprise everyone...most of Alonzo and McClaren.

Post Scriptum: since the Sirtokin news came out, the Polish press has been reporting that Robert Kubica will do DTM (does this still exist?) with Mercedes in 2018.

Williams to announce second driver on Friday

Williams will finally reveal the identity of Lance Stroll's 2018 teammate on Friday.

With Felipe Massa retiring, the once-great British team is the last on next year's grid to firm up its driver plans.

After a seven year F1 absence due to injury, Robert Kubica was believed to have been the frontrunner.

But Renault reserve Sergey Sirotkin then became a late contender, reportedly promising $15 million in sponsorship and going quicker than Kubica in the post-Abu Dhabi test.

Russia's Tass news agency now reports that Williams will end the long period of speculation by making an announcement on Friday, 15 December.

"All Russian fans of motor sport hope very much to hear confirmation about Sirotkin and Williams in the very near future," said Russian motor racing federation chief Igor Yermilin.

"As far as I understand, talks are proceeding and the management of Sergey and SMP Racing are working hard," he told Sportbox.

It is understood that Kubica is now out of the running completely, with only Sirotkin's Russian compatriot Daniil Kvyat regarded as a remote 'plan B'.

"Ideally we would like to see both Russians in the team, but unfortunately that is unrealistic," said Yermilin. "In any case, both are worthy of being race drivers for Williams or other teams."

Well...I maybe old and still fuming about the cold war (which I am) but I still find hard to give any credit to the Tass agency...Except for that sad expression: "the once-great British team"

(Note, by the way, that the new "Sputnik" news agency, which is the new "voice of the Kremlin" here, isn't more credible either; but those clowns blotted their copybook during the presidential campaign by smearing the then "improbable" candidate Emmanuel Macron, who has a long memory and likes his vengeance cold, so...No P&R, just to say that as Russian news agencies go, well...)

It's sad really as I really like Williams. But with factories having taken over it was only a matter of time. Perhaps if they can stay alive until the rule change it'll be different but I doubt it. Factories wouldn't tolerate losing a championship to Williams any longer, they'd just leave.

This is so, so stupid..what kind of idiots are rui(n)ing the team!!??
I remenber when someone said Ayrton was worth an active suspension! How much money would williams need to invest in order to meke their cars go 0.5 sec faster? 50 mil, 100 mil?, well, for about 5 mil they had a driver that was a full second faster than Stroll!!!and knew how to develp the car, so with Massa in the seat, the williams would be potentialy 1 to 1,5 sec faster a lap than it will be with those to useless drivers. Williams deserve to be put out of it's misery, it's a pity but i prefer to see it end than became what Brabham and Lotus were at the end. They had a beautifull history but it's definitly over.
