So many examples where companies believe their own BS and a decade later they are gone. Brand is something that takes years to achieve but can be lost in an instant. Ferrari need to stay paranoid about competition and react with speed. Case in point - no super/hypercar company have an answer to the Tesla Roadster - whether the performance claims are true or not.
Ferrari is not just the strongest car brand in the world, its the strongest brand of anything in the world. They blew it when they switched to production turbo cars with puny engines, no Ferrari sound, low RPM, plastic manifolds and no PF design. Yet their brilliant strategy continues to set supply just shy of demand even as they increase production and announce an SUV. As far as tesla, the only lower notch Ferrari can achieve to enthusiasts is a totally electric car. At least we still have the 812 albeit hard on the eyes.
http://auto.ferrari.com/en_US/news-events/news/ferrari-the-worlds-most-powerful-brand/ Different year and 'strongest' meaning 'powerful' instead of 'valuable' but you get the point. You won't see any of the competitors that folks were worrying about anywhere near Ferrari's universe.
Design wise, 488 gtb replacement will be based on J50 inspiration(Manzoni nearly told in that way) This is the only thing i'm hopping for.

I'll believe it when I see it in production..........a classic example of an over hyped unprofitable and highly subsidised brand that is unable to meet it's current commitments let alone any future ones, blatantly attempting to meet its current financial obligations by getting the kool-aid drinkers to fund future one's................did someone just say ponzi?
My thoughts exactly! Ferrari obviously notices what other supercar makers are doing but in the end it does its own thing. I don't believe that McLaren's products have any impact on Ferrari's product planning.
thank you maha! good content! even if i´m of course not really a fan of something like this. but yeah. first experienced this system 14 years ago in a BMW Z4 back in the days... but as i remember well this one was just connected to the airbox. since my 991GT3RS i even prefer inside louder than outside. getting wise and older...
Agreed, the technology for their roadster doesn't exist in useable form today and I personally doubt Tesla will still be in business when it does. This is a company that loses significant amounts of money on every car it makes and clearly hasn't got it's head around actually producing vehicles in quantity. In the meantime all the major brands are catching-up fast and they have the advantage of actually knowing how to produce cost effectively in volume. Has Tesla pushed the electric car industry forward - absolutely - but they simply don't have the capacity to produce.
Bold predictions these but we have the advantage of actually seeing the outcome unlike politics. IMHO the other car manufacturers have no hope of catching Tesla (again IMHO Only). The fact that they can produce products that have been superseded and are "trying" to catch up means nothing. In addition going forward most of their IP (engines, gerabox, mechanical and fluid based tech that keeps the ICE/turbo engine working) will be worthless on the balance sheet (most of their factories too). Add the fact that Tesla is not a car company but a tech company and works at the speed of a tech company and its IP is not cars but the software and AI systems that drive the "app on wheels" (car, truck etc) and the game has moved on. And if Tesla fails it will be purchased as its chump change for Apple, Google, Amazon, Uber etc etc. Interesting times these nevertheless
Other manufacturers are actually ahead of Tesla IMHO, it's just that they play in the real world instead of a virtual one: - they keep the goal of making money, public subsidies that slow down Tesla's bankrupt could never be enough for a large company with high production numbers - they have higher standards when it comes to advanced technologies Tesla releases its AI software with the mindset of a company producing video games, their AutoPilot is total crap but they do not care; all large manufacturers have better software (already largely demonstrated) but they will only release it when it will be reasonably trustable - the reference for real manufacturers are the aircraft and defense industries and not the video games, safety matters to them.
Perhaps you've never been in a Tesla? Doesn't matter how fast an electric car goes, it's boring. You try it a couple of times and by the third go it becomes a non-event. Never tire of flooring it in a Ferrari. It could be half as fast and it would still be ten times as exciting. The reality is, other for those for whom the stopwatch is everything, Tesla has no answer to the traditional supercar.
i watched yesterday the latest SpaceX launch... tesla and musk keep pushing the whole car industry forward. i like and heavily appreciate it. but. we are all waiting here for a emotional track tool. which should not safe the planet or which in fact should not make any sense. i‘m hot for it.
Agree 100%. And frankly who cares as I appreciate EV as well as ICE/Turbo and will buy what I like if it gets me excited. Back to the 488SV - I really do hope its not just a "bit more aero and a few extra HP" but something outrageous.
I owned a model x and sold it. Biggest piece of **** I’ve ever owned. Spent more time in the shop than on the road. And I’m not a tesla hater as my wife drives a model s as a daily. But Elon musk is a hype master. Every single product has been late to market. Roof tiles, model s, model x, model 3, battery packs- etc etc. this roadster will never see the light of day Anytime soon.
I honestly don’t get this whole Pininfarina love affair. Sure they have designed some nice cars but not a single car they’ve made would make me say ohhh- gotta have one cause it’s designed by pininfarina. Plenty of awesome non pininfarina cars out there as well.
I take nothing away from Pininfarina. Certainly, some of the greatest Ferrari’s were designed by them. I’m a proud owner of a 328 and I love it. But that was then and this is now. In today’s world I much prefer they have an in-house design studeo, just as I’m proud they forge their engines in house. I suppose one could think the LaFerrari, 488, 812 Superfast and Portifino are awful designs. Then again, you’d be nuts if you did.
I disagree. I'm optimistic that for the foreseeable future Ferrari will continue to deliver awesome cars !
In which case you will be disappointed as this is a VS of the 488, not a new design or new car so expect accordingly. Whether your justified concerns turn out true will first be evident in the 488 successor, but they didn't do a bad job with the LF for starters.
La Ferrari is probably one of the most gorgeous cars out there. And like you stated, not designed by Pininfarina.
Careful, there is an element that believes that Pininfarina designed the LaFerrari and then Ferrari stole it and claimed it as their own original. There’s also a theory that some teenage kid designed it and Ferrari stole that too. Oh, and I wrote the Declaration of Independence. Crazy.
Well, that is true. But, in modern times (decades), Ferrari's success is most certainly attributed in part to the designs of Pininfarina.
Dont get me wrong- Im not taking anything away from Pininfarina. But that ship has sailed and I don't think Ferrari is any worse off. Not a single person who didn't buy a 488 said - you know what- love the car but since Pininfarina didn't design it- Im not interested.
