Looking at getting the new Daytona but pretty new to the world of watches (not a collector).

Really like the look of the solid white gold version and price I got quoted was $45k US. However, from what I gather the SS version is harder to get and only $14k.

Question to the forum: am I correct in assuming that the shortage of SS Daytonas is largely because of its price point being only $14k and so more mainstream buyers are trying to get it, resulting in a long waitlist? In that case, the solid gold variants are actually much rarer (with their production numbers more limited due to a much smaller of buyers in the $40k+ range?)

I asked this question at an authorized dealer but they didn't seem to grasp the idea...they said the SS versions are rarer... I asked what price Rolex is typically sold and they confirmed it was the SS $8-$10k watches ... so I *think* they confirmed my point... but really want to hear what the experts here think.

There is less than $4k of gold in a $45k Daytona so the price difference isnt based on materials... they must be much rarer, no?

    Thanks!

The stainless steel Daytona has been in very high demand for quite some time. Not sure what the production for the white gold is but used steel Daytonas are pretty close in price to used white gold Daytonas when you consider one has a retail of $14k and the other $45k.

Get the one you like most but don't expect the white gold to hold its value relative to its new price.

Yes there is a wait list for SS Daytona. It can be 6 months to 2 yrs depending on your AD. In terms of gold in a watch...it is not worth looking at the residual gold in the watch. You are not going to melt the watch and sell the gold for the money you spent on it. My suggestion is buy a SS Daytona. It has held it value for a while and it is desirable in the used market world. Good Luck.

Check out the Rolex forem. You will learn a lot. When spending this much money, be patient. I love my gold Daytona. You can't get the new ceramic SS Daytona's for $14k.

FYI I tried on a YG Sub and a YG Daytona side by side. Night and day difference. The Sub just trumps the Daytona with the wow factor. I ended up purchasing the Sub. One thing though, that gold is heavy!

Yes, true, the sub is far more substantive than the Daytona, and with the blue dial just stunning - but, I would suggest that the Daytona is more "flexible" in with regards to causal, formal, black tie, beach, etc. Also, I find that while my Daytona is somewhat limited in others wearing them out in the wild - it seems like almost every 14 year old kid is wearing a sub (just not a real one) :(

SS Daytonas can be had right away if you're willing to pay 6-7K over list.

Most 2 tones and solid's aren't hard to get either, and they cost more, but they're not even list price, let alone over.

There is no such thing as a Daytona waiting list; it is an excuse used by ADs to get rid of eligible customers yet keep them interested and on good terms. Most ADs will have a stock of SS Daytonas that they will hoard until they have the right customers to give them to. Keeping them off the market also helps add to the mystique and the supply/demand game Rolex love to play with Daytonas. ADs must buy their stock from Rolex and what they are allowed to buy depends on their business, discount rates and relationships with key figures in the Rolex set up. As a rule of thumb, for every 18k watch a dealer buys in, they can get a SS Daytona.

So, the question is, how does one become the 'right' customer? Well, start by buying the 18k. Then buy something else. Then ask. You'll be surprised at how quickly the 'waiting list' disappears you'll get one at list price, or free if you're famous.

    I was a Rolex AD.

yup, then you just have to decide white or black dial....

i also understand, as an ad, you are not to put them on display.
