Ok, the title is way more dramatic than need be. I'm sure many of us have fallen victim to this scenario:

    1. You try to start your engine but nothing happens, doesn't even turn
    2. Your engine is running, but you can't get it out of park. None of the gear selectors work (1, R, N)

There is not a single error message or indicator to tell you why the car won't respond like it should! And just as you're halfway through soiling your pants, it occurs to you that the engine bay latch is open.

This has happened to me after showing friends the engine bay or when the detailer is trying to move the car while the latch isn't fully fastened.

Anyone else fall pray to this? Why don't they have the car display a message saying "Close the latch you idiot?"

    Merry Christmas everyone :)

On my F12, you cannot start the engine with the hood up. The message will read "bonnet open". Two things odd about that is it seems natural to hit the key with the hood open when working on the engine and its a hood not a bonnet.

Maybe check the language selection on your settings menu, it might be set to English instead of American, thus causing the "bonnet open" instead of "hood open"

i learned this lesson in a 360 f1. had to call the dealer from a stoplight as my hand accidentally hit the hood button.

Yes, it has happened to me as well. But as I recall, the engine would turn over, just not start, which is even more confounding. And also I think there was a tiny little light that did show the "open hood" symbol.

If my memory serves me correct you can start the 458 engine with the engine lid up but you have to hold the start button until it turns over rather than just pressing it like normal.
