I took the turbo Ferrari out for a short trip to the auto parts store last weekend. As I was driving along the access road a modified 7 liter 427 cubic inch C6 Z06 exited the freeway right next to me. He revved on me. I dropped down a gear and took off. About a mile later he caught up. There were no cars in sight. No cross streets. Just two cars on a clear one way road. We were both going about 60. He lined up and I heard him hit it. I was in 3rd gear about 5500rpm. He pulled about half a car on me before I got full boost. By the top of third gear I had 3/4th of a car on him. I grabbed 4th gear and he disappeared behind me.
Pretty darned impressive! A stock Z06 with stock tires can routinely turn low 11's in a 1/4 mile; they have run as quick as 10.98 totally stock (stock tires as well) which would blow a 288 GTO into the weeds and run with a Ferrari 458 Speciale. I'm amazed that a 3x8 motor could be made to produce the 475-500 HP necessary to run with a Z06 without turning into an IED!
AHA! I guess it was modified to be SLOWER than a standard ZO6! Seriously, since the C6 Z06 weighs about the same as a stock 3x8 - possibly a bit less - it would take the same HP to match the performance - around 500. 1. Are you really getting that kind of power out of a 3x8 motor/applying it to the ground or, 2. Is it possible that the ZO6 guy wasn't really trying, just egging you on for grins?
We turned it up a little about a month ago. Six hundred and twenty wheel horsepower. (Seems like more when I spell it out). That's a stock 78 308 in good condition at the bottom for comparison. Image Unavailable, Please Login
He had exhaust for sure. I assumed the usual: exhaust, headers, cam, and a tune. I was disappointed that he didn't follow me to chat about it. After the beating he took a U turn and headed the opposite direction.
How would that motor, trans and rear handle all of that extra power? Your car makes more power than a 488.
A 488 shifts so fast that they might still have me in a 0-60 or 1/4 mile. My motor is built with forged pistons, Carrillo rods, and runs on E85. The transmission has been rebuilt, but not upgraded (no upgrades exist to my knowledge). I have a spare on the shelf though. I avoid hard launches and shock loading the transmission. Aaron
Aaron... so you are running a stock 308 crank or have you upgraded to say a 360 ? The turbo's alone cant be getting you all that extra HP
I've got a stock 308 crank. QV block, JE high compression pistons, copper head gaskets, 348 heads with custom cams, a 328 oiling system, 328/308 intake plenum/runners, coil on plug ignition, full efi system with a Link G4 ecu, water to air intercooler, and a Precision 6265 turbo (a 6466 ball bearing turbo is coming soon). I'll have to check my notes, but boost is currently 16-18 psi. Aaron
600+ hp out of a 3x8 motor? I'm impressed that the crank can survive a WOT run for more than a few seconds! It speaks for some good original Ferrari engine quality and good quality aftermarket parts/engine building. Nice work! The boost is, of course, making the vast majority of the HP - more than doubling the HP that would be available after the other engine mods. Without supercharging, I'd guess you have around 275 HP at the rear wheels. As has been suggested...without appropriate mods to the drivetrain, "drag-strip" starts are probably NOT a good idea! ALTHOUGH...maybe the tranny would surprise me but I suspect the clutch/axles wouldn't! FWIW, I have to admit I am disappointed in the power output of the "good running" carbed 308. I would have thought they could manage RW HP into the 200's at around 7k RPM. But it looks like around 180 at 6300.
I think the best I ever got out of my carb'd 308 was 188whp. 4Webers dyno' d his 79 and got about 191 I think. The graphs are probably up on this site somewhere. Aaron
No offense to any Corvette owners but, let's not forget you had him beat in the looks department as well.......not only did you win, you looked better while doing it . As always, your 308 is just stunning to me. Even if you had done ZERO engine mods, I would rather have your car than ANY Corvette.
Well let's not discount driver capabilities. There are, for example, 2,907 YouTube videos titled "Z06 hits tree"
I kind of hope he went home and googled 308 acceleration times, and now he thinks a Honda Oddysey could beat him. Lol.
I apologize for my sarcastic response, there is no way I expected a 308 to make the power that your car does. Pretty sick how the drive train holds up under so much load, I am very surprised. We are conditioned to think they will break so easily. Who built your motor? They definitely seem to know what they are doing.
No apology necessary. The heads, cams, and pistons were done by Bob Norwood. As was the assembly of the long block. The turbo kit, intercooler, fuel system, exhaust, efi conversion, and ecu tuning was done by ATS Exotics (my shop). Aaron
