Trying not to derail the thread, but...your answer is true, but has "some bias" towards the US situation...
Here in Europe, most kids still learn to drive a stick first; my generation - I was born in 1960 - didn't knew anything else but sticks...
Furthermore, and that is the saddest part of the answer, the authorities are really intent to kill these cars with new taxes on emissions, horsepower, and on about everything else; and the speed limit on standard roads here in France will be lowered from July 1st onwards from 90 to 80km/h that is from 55 miles per hour to 49...in a not too distant future, you will be faster on a bicycle...

interesting didn't know most still learned on sticks. Again you've posted tons of numbers here, at the $100k level, there really is nothing like the OP asked sub 3k units except the 575, maybe the 456 but I really know nothing about that car. Do you have any production figures on the California, 599 and F12 for comparisons?

I see a contradiction in your logic - you say the 599 is better in every way than a 575, but less desirable - yet you also say the 575 is better than a 550 in every way, and therefore more desirable. The reality is this: you can't rely solely on quantitative assessment when it comes to something as passionate and economically driven as Ferrari enthusiasm. Low production numbers restrict supply, but it doesn't translate cleanly into increased demand. Furthermore, all quirks are not created equal (e.g. first F1 in a V12, which seems a bit granular). With that said, I fundamentally disagree with your conclusion; I would pay much, much more for a 550 or 599 than a 575 (which I have little interest in), despite 3083 550's built and ~3500-4000 599's. The salient reasons being that the driving experiences in the 550 and 599 are more essential to my driver profile than a 575, which is a compromise between the two that dilutes the experience in either direction. I see several people on here with 550 + 599, but can't think of anyone with 550 + 575 or 599 + 575. Possibly because the market shares that viewpoint as well.

With regard to the question posed in the thread. I love, love, love Ferrari and think those built pre-2008 are preferable to any other brand (with a few exceptions), but for the sake of finding the right intersection of the OP's price-point, depreciation tolerance, and desire to be an oracle of an underdog, I'd suggest looking to our friends in Stuttgart. A bluechip 996 GT3 or 996 GT2 would be my ~100K +/- $25K choice. Both are devoid of anything but a pure, visceral, unapologetic driving this side of the year 2000. I think these cars will be looked upon very favorably as simple custodians of Porsche initial mission in a world of technological immersion, and will fall in line with the great 911's that seem to emerge from the "used car" category out of nowhere into high repute.

Again everyone is entitled to their opinion, you clearly own a 550 and its an amazing car. A manual is a very cool thing to have and thats why 550s are currently worth more than 575s. Markets shift quick though, a few years back nobody cared about manuals and now they're all the rage, thats not 100% certainty to always be the case as the pool of people who can drive manuals shrinks over time with so many less manuals being made today. In regards to the 575, when it came out, was it not a car that was an upgraded 550 in nearly every way? It was. Both cars are amazing and share the same body, but at the end of the day the 550 is the umpteenth manual front engine v12 car that Ferrari ever made, very cool, but thats the truth. The 575 will always be the FIRST front engine V12 that ferrari made with a transmission that is truly not desirable by todays standards.....but quirky systems, thats what drives desirability in the long run. Look at how awful a bmw isetta is in every way, but its quirky and thats why its values are soaring. If you step back for a moment and concur that every ferrari moving forward will not be a manual and we look back in 20 years and what car started it all, it was the 355 but if you want the car that started the whole movement in V12 cars.....it was the 575.

Really wanted to concentrate on Ferrari in the thread, but truth be told a 993TT also lurks at the outer edge of my periphery. Only dogs available for $100k, but decent 60k mile cars can be had for $125k. Had a modified 996TT for 8 years, so have scratched the 996 itch raw. Nice cars Porsches are, but do not give the "jumping out of my skin" feeling a Ferrari or Lamborghini does. I own a '99 Diablo Roadster, and the drive plus the rarity (a one year design with 142 made) really fuels this concept of wanting another "special" car.

This thread is fantastic, let me just say thanks to all of you for all the cars mentioned. It educated me.

I thought I would sort the models mentioned by production count for further context.
Parameters (Around under 3,000 created) obtained for under 100K (assuming OPs okay with a Grade 1 car)

    400 (5sp) = 147
    208 GTS = 160
    208 GTB = 208
    208 GTS turbo = 250
    412 (5sp) = 270
    412 (A) = 306
    400 (A) = 355
    456 GTA = 403
    400i (A) = 422
    208 GTB turbo = 437
    308 GTBi = 494
    365 (5sp) = 524
    Mondial QV Cab = 629
    456M GTA = 650
    456M GT = 688
    Mondial 8 = 703
    Mondial 3.2 Cab = 810
    208 GT4 = 840
    Mondial t = 858
    400i (5sp) = 883
    Mondial 3.2 = 987
    Mondial t Cab = 1,017
    Mondial QV = 1,145
    456 GT = 1,548
    308 GTSi = 1743
    308 GT4 = 2,826
    308 GTB = 2,897
    612 = 3,025

I have not kept with full valuations, so I'm sure I may have put cars on this list over 100K (even grade 1, or salvage title) or miss some vehicles.

If I were the OP, my shop list would be 412i 5 speed, Mondial t coupe, and 456M 5 Speed. (if rarity and potential appreciation is on the list)

    Cheers

as much as I love the 308 GT4 - 2,800 was a bit too close to the 3,000 thresholds the OP laid out - but I do believe we will only continue to see it appreciate both in value and sentiment.

My short list of cars being multiples rarer then the 308 GT 4 (the 412 5spd being 10X rarer, the 456 5spd being 5X rarer, and the Mondial t coupe 3.5x rarer)

I'm voting for the 308 GT4. Low production. Enzo era. It's Genesis for the V8 road cars that all the V8 models can trace their lineage back to (and up to the 355, directly). It is also one of the few Bertone styled cars. I want one.

I'm also voting for the 355. The end of an era. The Ferrari that saved Ferrari. Last of the hand built cars. A Montezemolo era icon.

Yes that is a beauty! To me these are an acquired taste and if you have a appreciation for this car you could also enjoy a 308GT4. Either would be great to own IMO. The smart choice might depend on what you may wish to own in the future since getting know the engines and parts could prove useful not to mention sourcing a good mechanic.

To me if you ordered a $300K car, or a $2MM car, or a $30K car, you ought to get the car you ordered. Customer Service 101. Otherwise, you don't give a _ about your customer.

Yeah, manual 400i/412 are cars that weren't loved but could become loved because of the desire for a manual transmission V12 Ferrari.

Im surprised no one has picked up on the 612. its been mentioned but ignored. Ok 3025 made but that is close enough. Under appreciated - check, available under 100k - check, reliable and great to drive - check. Try finding owners and past owners with a bad word to say about them. In fact there is a thread running on FC where most previous owners have said they would have another. There are many other comments saying it is becoming more and more beautiful with age, it’s the last of the gentlemen‘s GT Ferraris. Everything after the 612 is aggressive looking. The 612 has class.

I had the same criteria and motivation as the OP when i was looking, out of everything I could have chosen I chose a 612.
