Excellent auto show coverage as usual:http://www.autoextremist.com
John, Thanks for the photo of the Lexus tail light. Had not realized how it was detailed in any of the other photos. How did it look in person?
Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login It really projects off the surface quite a bit. This 3 dimensional taillight effect is prominent on several cars recently. I like the Toyota execution.
jm2 - thank you for the naias pix.......but how could you not show the BestOfShow? (imo of course....) Image Unavailable, Please Login
What an one say about that? Had an interesting experience at the G Wagon display. Unfortunately I didn’t take a photo. There was a very attractive female, dressed in her finest casual garb, with enough gold & diamonds to shame a Russian oligarch, taking countless selfies of herself with the G Wagon. At one point it was almost embarrassing. But she just couldn’t leave the vehicle alone! I wished I had had the chutzpah to take a photo of her antics, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, I was so embarrassed for her. But she seemed quite pleased with herself seated in the vehicle taking countless selfies. Whatever!
Be safe. From what I recall, about 15 years ago or so, the first night was "gang banger" night. Kinda freaky. Right close to closing time you'd see groups of gang members wearing red, wearing blue, and cops. Hopefully, that has all changed.
detroit show: seems like the japanese designers are hellbent on ruining their hard work on the rest of the car by totally ****ing up the front. some of those look quite good, until you come round to the grill and lights, and then it scares the **** out of you! my grandmother had a saying for sights like that..... they have a face only a mother could love ! these designers have been drinking too much sake !

They should have stopped at that point while they were ahead on the front end. Law of diminishing returns definitely at work here.
Not defending the front end of the Lexus at all, but it did look substantially better in the clay. You can see where the design came from. It wasn't until they added the obnoxious grill texture that it really all went to hell.
Agree that the genesis of it is visible in the clay but it still proves that they need to learn simplification of the nose side venting. Shame on all the management that kept approving this along to become the final solution. Which studio is this?
Yeah, Calty. That is the "leaving for France" Ian Cartabiano overseeing the clay in the picture. I guess this was his last hurrah before going, though he didn't know he was leaving until after this was finished. I would guess that they only saw how the nose (with grill) would look in some digital images, before seeing the completed model when it arrived from whichever shop built it. Sometimes computer renderings can hide the reality.
Truer words never spoken. I feel the same when i see what many are doing with the character design in big hollywood scifi/superhero movies.
See, thats a neat piece of art if it was a stand alone sculpture. But as a vehicle it looks ridiculous.
That's the single biggest weakness the students demonstrate at school. They try to cram several different designs on one vehicle rather than learning how to edit their work. Sometimes it drives me crazy I'm glad to see some of the latest concept cars exhibit some restraint.
Everyones afraid they wont get another shot to impress/use their skills. Seems to be based on creative insecurity. I used to think it was tempered with age/experience, but these days even the 'best' seem to be crippled with this condition.
Witness the current state of vehicle design. Everyone is looking over their shoulders checking out the competition and creating wretched excess in design execution. Saner heads will ultimately prevail.............I hope. There are two tenants which I hold all design to: judgement & execution. Most everyone has the execution part down. Lately it’s the judgement part where everyone seems to come off the rails. And these guys & gals get paid big bucks for their judgement.
