He tells some amazing race stories in his first book, "All But My Life." His Mille Miglia drives were hair raising...which may be why he lost his prematurely. I got his autograph at a Maserati year at the Monterey Historics. Great pleasure.
I remember seeing him at Pebble Beach after he fell down the elevator shaft in his home. I was thinking, "Any 80 year old that falls down an elevator shaft would be lucky to be alive, let alone traveling the world and driving sports cars."
His Mille Miglia drive with Dennis Jenkinson was epic. Jenk's account made pretty good reading...should have been a movie. Image Unavailable, Please Login
first class man. have met and spoken with him many times, and he never ceases to charm and amaze. last time was just a couple years ago at amelia, and he was trying to flirt with my mother !
There's also a time, as I remember the story, that he's racing a Maserati in the Mille Miglia and he's doing well over 150 mph and heading into a small town and at the end of the road is a café full of people all watching the race...and he's heading straight towards them at over 150 mph. The only way he can go is a 90 degree left turn when he gets to the café. So he hits his braking marker, he stands on the brake pedal and the whole pedal snaps off, right at the floor board...there is literally no more pedal to step on. What happens is somewhere in his book, "All But My Life." An incredible man.
Man, Myth, Legend. Got to shake his hand and exchange a few words at Amelia a few years back, I was truly honored. You better believe that my 4 and 7 year olds can both look at old pictures and tell you exactly who "Sir Stirling Moss" is.
The proof that Stats do not tell the whole Story ...never WDC but one of the greatest ever. Few of them are remembered the way he is decades after ending their Career. Certainly none of the current drivers comes close and his MM Record will last forever. Happy retirement Sir Stirling and thank you for all the wonderfull pictures I was able to take of you in the last years on numerous occasions. Gesendet von meinem SM-G930F mit Tapatalk
one of the times i met stirling was about 2003 at the goodwood festival of speed. in front of the main house they had set up the usual extravaganza and that year mercedes was the featured marque. one of the cars in the display was a mercedes formula 1 car that stirling had driven. my son was about 5 years old at the time, and as i walked past the car with him, he pulled me towards it, and wanted to get in....so i looked around and seeing nobody close, i hoisted my son into the driver's seat. he was sitting there with his hands on the wheel and making car noises, and i was telling him about the car and the great man who drove it, and then i heard this voice say something like '....and it was a jolly great time too!' and i looked up and there was stirling ! i was embarrassed that i had my son in the car etc, and stirling just smiled and said, no leave him in there, best to get them started young !' anyway, it was a nice moment.
Had the pleasure of meeting him twice, in person.. He was always cordial and had time to talk...once, his wife even broke into his conversation at dinner, to turn him towards me! She was fun too.
