picked up my 3 year-old Macbook Pro from Apple today, with a new screen fitted, free of charge.

My model was the first with the retina screen and had an issue with the anti-glare coating wearing off, so they're replacing them all for free. I think that is excellent customer service.

There are simply no words to describe how utterly pathetic that is in every way.

For 90% of it I was waiting for the punchline because it was so obviously a joke.

    But then, it wasn’t.

Dear God, we truly have lost it.

Is it? You can give voice commands to the phone to do everything. Swipe left/right/up/down. Settings. Open close apps. Scroll. Just about everything. Sounds very handy to me. Especially when driving, or doing anything that keeps your hand busy, actually. It's like Siri/google plus even more.

    It usually doesn't work though...lol.

    Righto.
I’m not posting this as an Apple v Samsung thing.
    Genuine question.

A mate is here. He has a Samsung phone and for some reason he cannot send or receive photos or videos via wifi.
He has to connect to mobile data for it to work.
He keeps getting the below message whenever he tries to do it.

My housemate then appeared and said her mum has the same “problem” with her Samsung phone.

I’m sure it’s just a settings issue. Can anyone explain how to sort it out?

    Cheers.

I should add that that message appears even though he is connected to my home wifi.

Everything else works -surfing the net, email etc.
Just not sending or receiving pics / videos.

    That’s what I mean. I don’t have a gun, fortunately.

My phone happily sends pics / vids via wifi through text / mms all the time.
In fact we did it tonight from my phone to his to check. So WTF are you on about?

Yeah. I turned my mobile data off and sent a bunch of pics / vids from my phone to his to check.
When he tried to do the same in reverse he got that message.

I just thought there must be some simple settings issue that he could change.

    Maybe not.

What it means is that on an iPhone if you turn mobile data off, it still uses mobile data.

After that I imagine the final scene is the phone lying in bed next to the women the following morning smoking a cigarette.
After all, it did all the work.

    Gee modern men are pathetic.

“Hey. Come over. I’m going to ask my phone how to put my pants on next...”

Because you're using an instant messaging service called imessage which is provided by Apple, Apple is forwarding those messages for you.

Android is an open ecosystem so you need to install 3rd party software. Whatsapp has been providing this service since 2009 imessage only started in 2011 :p other alternatives he could use are android messages or telegram etc.

There is also a new SMS/MMS standard called RCS being pushed by Google. Currently only available on the latest Samsung phones but all the major carriers are implementing this technology. Starting with Telstra which recently released their own RCS app.

OK techies - what is the main physiology required for touch screens - is it temperature of the finger, or electric charge, or ????
I pretty much always have cool hands and I have enormous problems with touch screens (self service checkouts, ATM machines etc) - my touch just often doesn't register? Not just random either, the local library self service is the worst - there can be a queue of people who have no problem, but I end up there tapping away a dozen times before it registers...

They work on capacitance mostly but there are several other methods.

I work with a company that install the digital directories at shopping centres and one of the big bugbears for me is getting them to work correctly, some are very sensitive and will react to the slightest touch where others need the finger pressed hard to get a reaction .................. it's still a developing science and even with the best software there are still some vagaries that mystify me, like at Westfield Carindale I had to literally shave a mill off the touch screen to get it to register whereas all the other 15 or so were more than happy with large gaps .

Next time you use one of the screens try to put your whole hand on and see if that registers .......... if not then you are a vampire :p
