During a couple of the group drives (Frosty Balls, etc.) over the years I passed (and one year stopped at) a small railroad yard that had a bunch of derelict steam locomotives and other rolling stock. I always thought this would make a great backdrop for some photos. If anyone can ID a location for this site, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Its not abandoned, but there's a 'dead line' of old steam engines and other equipment behind the station in New Hope, PA.

Nice lead, Art. Curiosity led me to check further and found this article showing the old steam locomotives. Surreal! Photographers paradise!

Can't tell whether a car could get close enough to use the locomotives as a backdrop for pictures, but do see some asphalt paralleling the tracks in photos. Tried using google maps earth view and found some old-looking rail equipment, but couldn't zoom in enough to confirm that they were steam locomotives. There was definitely an old GP diesel present. Hopefully this is the correct "New Hope."

    Enjoy!

How about Strasburg Railroad in Lancaster, county. Many steam engines there. The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum is across the street. Lots of neat stuff there. Our antique car club has a Brass area show on site every year, including a run with the train on a side road. Makes a good backdrop for photos

John, I've driven up to them many times. Just ask nicely and you shouldn't have a problem. If you pay to park or ride the train, it's even easier. Note, you will be driving on cinders and other stuff.

I think that pit stop for the Frosty run was on Rt. 82. Most likely north of 322.

    Hi Don!

Google "1405 Giegertown Rd, Birdsboro, PA" then look on the west side of the road. That is the "rest stop" on the Great Frosty Balls Rally - may it rest in peace.

Make sure you go to the Whip for lunch and enjoy Rte 841.

Thanks to all for the replies. Birdsboro it is. Curtis, good to see your 17 years in college were good for something. ;-) Knee replacement this week will keep me from revisiting the site for a couple of months.

Yep - I is a doctor. Just not the kind that can help you... o_O

Good luck on the knee, Don.
