An old thread with the same old misinfo..

18” BBS Challenge wheels are aluminium alloy and not magnesium.

They have a label on the inside surface saying “not for highway use” but also carry the JWL logo....
You can decide if they are legal or not in your country but I’m aware of nothing in the U.K. that stops use.

I’ve ran mine for 5 years and nearly 20k miles on poor U.K. roads without issue.

I bought a couple of spares through my main dealer in the UK last year as they were still available.
I think Ricambi stock them and have a picture on their site showing the part numbers.

I said high Magnesium content not Magnesium wheels. Yes an aluminium allow with higher than normal Mg content. Makes the Al alloy stronger so you can cast a lighter wheel but more brittle. Maybe you where just lucky...

There’s no magnesium in the 18” CH wheel.
The flow forming process gives the strength plus low weight.

I’m 4000 miles from my car so can’t post a pic of the material code.

I sure did! when this thread and the other saying "someone should buy these cheap items from ebay" came up, I was getting worried that ppl not in the know would all of a sudden be interested but I think I came out pretty good!

I bid on them but missed out. Glad someone here scooped them up. Do our centercaps not fit them?

Is your claim that it is misinformation because someone said they have mg content OR that they are not road legal? Why do people think that their single data point is evidence of anything about the reliability/safety of a given item? That no different than saying "I hit a hole in one so EVERYONE should be hitting a hole in one". That just isn't how evidence works.

There is nothing that stops you from using ANY wheel on the road, except safety and common sense. It isn't like the police stop you and check your wheels for proper markings. You pointed out that they say "not for highway use", that pretty much sums it up. To the letter of the law, they are not legal. That doesn't mean that they will fail every time or that they are inherently unsafe. It does mean that they were designed for a different use and that use involves regular inspections and maintenance that road cars don't usually get.

Nope, the stock ones are 56mm OD & 43mm ID. The 18" CH wheels need 56mm OD & 52mm ID.

Magnesium content......mine are actually bare metal on the back as they left the factory. No corrosion.

I have access to a mint 18" silver set.

The standard Center Caps will not fit these wheels.
