Thanks Markos!!
Totally possible, right up to the threads. I used Tamiya modelling brushes and ColorPlus dye: Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's a good idea to usr a small brush. Looks good. I'm gonna use a dye that I used on my door panel areas that have peeled and the leather was green underneath. ill post a pic
Use fine thinner first, then fine sand paper without touching the threads, then thinner again. Good luck!
Ok so if I manage to get the dye on without touching the stitching how do I wipe it off with out it getting in the stitching? Force dry it?
It works, but it doesn't last long and the feel is not very good (in my opinion): I went for new leather by a good specialist ciao ciao Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You use a small wide brush (4mm wide) and apply a thin layer of dye, stitch by stitch. There is no wiping required when using ColorPlus dye. It air-dries.
I wouldn’t touch that wheel. That Patina takes 30 years to make. The leather and stitching looks great. A 37mm flat Prototipo in a condition like that is between $2K and $3K. Less if the stitching is dyed. I understand however that car restoration may be the goal and not the value of the steering wheel. FYI - to those considering a recover, just note that I have two rare/irreplaceable wheels stuck in customs in eastern europe. This is my fault for having extra crap in the box that customs thought was more valuable than what was declared. The shipper and I had a miscommunication.
Other members have already sent wheels to him successfully so fear not. My box was ridiculously large (32” TV box with TV images on the outside). He didn’t know what was in it. The shipper claimed everything but customs thought it was too low. The wheels in the box are a 38cm Alpina that came on early BMW 3.0 CSL’s before they switched to Petri wheels, and a 1965 Momo Le Mans, pre stacked logo, pre patent pending logo.
I like the patina. But my dash is perfect and I have new front seats and the wheel looks kinda grey. I just want to darken it up a little. I definitely don't want to restore it
