Driver selection is a big part of resource allocation.

They also manufacture way more in house than other teams and what might be considered prudent for a team that size. They even develop and make their own dampers. wtf. Even the top teams buy dampers from suppliers like Sachs.

One would think a cost analysis would show some advantage or not given how tightly cost is assessed in F1. Interesting tip!! :)

Exactly. Force India and Williams both have good base cars. FI have 2 very good drivers (whilst I don't rate Perez in the ''Alien'' category he's certainly worthy of an F1 drive IMO) whilst Williams employed (? is that even the word for half of their drivers...or now both ;)) a broken, ancient, retiree and a hobbyist. We can't be sure of course but I'd be willing to bet if the drivers had been reversed so would the teams positions.

    Like it thanks.

Interesting that he seemed to be giving it some higher revs in the slow hairpins to try and get the back end out ..rally style..but those snow tyres had too much grip.:)

    this is another one .

Ferrari: promoted the 2018 engine that has the duration of the 7 GPs!

Positive indications from the power unit come from Maranello, which at the counter would have reached a useful life to respect the constraints of the 3 power units during the season. Now a new headline is coming to increase performance.

Ferrari are very busy: the engine that will start the 2018 season would have reached the reliability to last 7 GP. In the Sports Management the fire up of the engine mounted on the new Red was welcomed with satisfaction, although the first two set in motion have failed. Nothing serious: just a mumble before the liberating scream, because the bench tests have yielded positive results.

The 2018 machine with a slightly longer wheelbase than last year is said to be very good at the canvas and aerodynamic level, while some doubts concern the duration of the power unit.

If you consider that the V6 Turbo that will be mounted on the new Red starting from the test of Barcelona maintains a close acquaintance with the unit signed 063 that played last season, it seems clear that the engineers directed by Corrado Iotti have done a great job to extend the life of a powerplant that was struggling to complete 5 GPs in 2017.

The chapter of the "burned" oil that characterized last year was closed definitively by the FIA, when the lubricants were used in an excessive way to bring in the combustion chamber the forbidden additives in petrol (it is rumored that there were those who last year he also added methanol to the anti-knock!), getting a "mixture" that allowed to significantly increase the power in some laps (we talked about 60 horses).

Therefore, the Cavallino motorists decided to take a step back, before making a longer one forward. The 2018 engine, at least at the beginning of the season, will be in line with the power of last year, while it should count on an important development during the championship, when a new warhead will be available that was designed specifically to exacerbate the pre -combustion and the prevailing concept of Tji to challenge the Mercedes even in the dry lap in qualifying.

The 6-cylinder turbo, however, will not have the pistons in steel alloy, as it should have been at the end of last season on the engine 4. The solution that was to be one of the cornerstones of the engine of Lorenzo Sassi was not adopted, as well as the project that was signed 064 and that was aborted in early summer.

The well-known Tuscan technician, who will soon be serving Brixworth at the Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain as soon as the gardening period expires, has adopted very strong solutions that did not give the results of reliability that the dt Mattia Binotto expected, so the its 6-cylinder was shelved and the 2018 engine was not born from a new project, but from the revised engine 2017.

Without the abuses of the oil of 2017, it will be up to the oilmen to make a concrete contribution to the growth of power with gasoline with a high calorific value, despite the very restrictive constraints that the International Federation has wished to apply. Shell will have to show not to fear the comparison with Petronas, exclusive supplier of Mercedes, which on this hybrid era has always represented the reference point for all, Exxon Mobil and BP including ...

Mercedes have signed Ferrari's former chief engine designer ahead of the 2018 season.

Lorenzo Sassi left Maranello last summer after reportedly being sacked by Sergio Marchionne but, according to the James Allen on F1 blog, will soon join up with F1's world champions to work in the multiple championship-winning Brixworth engine unit headed by Andy Cowell. Will probably be another Aldo Costa among others Ferrari has fired. Ferrari finds scapegoats, Merc picks them up and utilizes their talents in great ways. Say what you want about Toto but he's built an amazing organization.

One lives on fear of failure - the other at Mercedes generates success through engagement and open environment input.

Ferrari should have better results overall but they do not have an environment to capture success. With all the resources they have they provide results that dont reflect that resource total. I blame the idiotic culture they have.

Fans must accept some changes says Carey

Chase Carey has hit back at criticism of the changes being made to formula one.

Liberty Media has been slammed in recent days and weeks by some fans who believe the sport's new owners are changing too much.

For instance, the controversial Halo is arriving this year, grid girls have been banned, the long-standing race start time has been tweaked, and more races in the US are planned.

F1 chief executive Carey denies the fans are being ignored.

"The fans are incredibly important to us," he told Sport Bild, "just as Europe - including Gremany - is our base.

"So our motto is: same game, different approach. We want to create a product that includes everything the fans grew up with, but that is not frozen in time. Because if you do not allow change, you cannot grow.

"Bernie Ecclestone said himself in 2016 that he would not buy a ticket to a race. There was a negative spiral and we had to break it," American Carey added.

He sees many positives about F1 at present, including the biggest driving stars.

"Lewis Hamilton is a very special personality," Carey said of the reigning world champion.

"Half of Holland comes to the races to see Max Verstappen, and Ferrari is the brightest light in the sport."

However, he said he hopes there is more "competition and drama" in 2018 compared to last season.

"Last year it was too much of a duel between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton," said Carey.

"I wish that sometimes an underdog would win rather than only the favourites. Can Fernando Alonso win again? Can McLaren attack with Renault? Will Verstappen have more luck than in the first half of 2017?

"They would all be nice scenarios," he added.

Please do not rely on Google translate (post 685) it is beyond a joke, useless: trust me I have translated hundreds of thousands of words for my books.

Here is an example did you notice this in yor copy and paste?

"...when a new warhead will be available..."

Now we really are talking about an F1 arms race;-)!

I wonder what would happen if Red Bull fades out from F1 when contractual obligations are met, and then make their own series.

I think Red Bull understands it needs to be real, and not artificial. Liberty is going to try to go the WWE route.

I don't care if a driver/car take off 30 seconds into the distance and it "ruins the race", I think the achievement is impressive, and enjoy watching the performance. Its the same as watching a truely great swimmer or runner take off into the distance. "WOW!".

Instead of trying to reverse grids, bunch things up, let 'em race. Liberty's statements concern me.

I think Red Bull could convince Ferrari to join them in a rival series, which would also pretty much immediately give it some credit.

Haas would most likely jump ship too.

Then you have all the F2 teams who would like to step up.

F1 should not turn up engine volume says Abiteboul

F1 should not be trying to turn up the volume of its 'power units'.

Ever since the hybrid era began in 2014, fans have lamented the new sound and the sport's authorities have vowed to rev it up for the future.

But Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul said quiet engines are simply a sign of the power units' incredible efficiency.

"The exhaust sound is energy," the Frenchman told Canadian radio Rive-Sud de Montreal.

"If we begin to convert more energy into sound, then we will not achieve a good result in terms of energy efficiency.

"A loud sound from the engine and the economy of the engine are two conflicting goals," Abiteboul added.

He said a better approach would be to wait for the next generation of F1 fans to better appreciate energy efficiency.

"A generation of fans who have never heard V10 or V8 engines will soon grow up, and for them quiet engines will be the norm," he said.

"Perhaps formula one moved from one stage to the next too quickly and today is somewhat ahead of its time."
