The Ferrari 400 story ----Unique in many ways!

v “Gray market”: car f400’s brought to USA mostly by private owners in 1970’s –80’s due to new, stricter USA emissions regulations; 400 model was not US emissions legal

v Many federalized here with US emissions by some dealer’s, private co’s (i.e. Ameritech, in Conn.) Some made legal in Britain and France and exported here.

v Original pricing –$100 – 150K from Ferrari factory Italy.

v Available in 5 speed m/t or General Motors Standard Automatic transmission; turbo 400 (manual transmission was optional!)

v Ferrari Automatic Transmission: first true production Ferrari automatic transmission car. Urban Ferrari customers demanded an auto trans touring car. GM/AT was also used by Rolls Royce cars at this time.

v AS A KID I SAW PROTOTYPES OF THIS CAR BEING DEVELOPED AND TESTED AT LUIGI CHINETTI FERRARI AT 11TH AVE IN NYC IN THE LATE 1960’S (SEE CAVALLINO ED’S 168 AND 169)

v Several 365 GT 2+2’S were built by CHINETTI with A/T from GM., and tested on NYC streets!

v A/T 365’s WERE SENT TO MODENA, ITALY TO ENZO FOR HIS TESTING / APPROVAL

v CHINETTI WAS NO. AMERICAN FERRARI DISTRIBUTOR AND HEAD OF “NART” No. American racing team/Ferrari with dealer In NYC

v 365 / 2+2 a/t’s were so successful that they became prototypes for succeeding 2+2 400 model touring coupes (1979 and on), built with GM turbo hydramatic. Ironically, Chinetti could not legally import/sell these factory cars until 1986 due to new EPA smog rules! Thus “grey” USA status!

v 79-88 400, 400i, 412 2+2 automatics were Ferrari best sellers (all over the world). 10 year production run

v With 12 cylinders/400’s made great high speed “autobahn” touring cars. 150 mph top end. 330 to 360 hp, perfect for USA. Driving at speed.

v Many innovations: *Self level suspension

    *Dual a/c

    *Daytona-ish styling and aerodynamics

    *Huge 4 wheel disc brakes

*Race style independent suspensions with huge koni dampers. 4 shocks at the rear suspension.

    *Full race style tube frame

*Luxury car appointments / power equipment / interior design / use of leather etc. / quality materials

*Built like a tank – durable – weight ~3900 lb

*Timely design –way ahead of its time! Renown pininfarina bodywork /appointments, style

v Smooth watch like performance / handling/ ride/easy to drive well at speed

v Reportedly Enzo’s favorite daily ride (in a/t form ….he loved the car!)

v Unfortunately, 400’s were much criticized and recently maligned /not accepted by US Ferrariste due to its non dealer gray status – back door entry into USA market

v It did not meet US emissions from factory until 1986 and many Ferrari fans think it’s an ugly car.

v Still a 12 cylinder Ferrari which can be purchased today for $30 to 70K in good condition. This fact can’t be contested!

v Approx ~1,600 400, 400i, 412’s total worldwide were produced. Today only about 3-400 are present in USA total

    v 2+2 Ferraris were always best sellers for Ferrari /Chinetti in No. America (i.e. F365, F400, F412, F456 and now F612 models)

v Long live 12 cylinder Ferrari touring cars!

    v Cae bella machina!

Car Has 48,283 miles. $40,000.00 OBO

What's the history behind the unique white/blue/grey stripes on the front? Are those paint or some sort of wrap?

What works on the car and what doesn't work? Was there a repair on the driver's side front? The paint color seems a different shade...or am I just seeing things?

I know this car and it is a nice example that was owned by a real car Ferrari guy that took great care to maintain its originality.
