What's a good TDC tool for the 456. It has such a long tunnel. I see some cam degreeing kits. Anyone use those? Don't want to spend a fortune but want accuracy and ease of use/setup

Ken, a TDC finder will give you the point in the middle of the TDC "dwell", but the "Ferrari" way of finding TDC is different.

Ferrari defines TDC as the point where the piston initially reaches TDC, not the middle of the dwell. (The dwell can be from 1.5 to 2.5 degrees of crankshaft travel, depending on cam lobe wear, and other factors.)

So the best way, IMO, to find TDC is with a dial indicator, and then it's up to you whether you use the Ferrari method to set your degree wheel, or you set it in the middle of the dial indicator dwell.

John - I would encourage you to read thru the thread I posted. The harsh reality is a dial indicator is far less accurate than a dead stop.

Understand but I believe I can use the dial gauge like a dead stop. Measure +- distance on both sides, take degree wheel readings and divide by two.

What I need is a dial gauge that will work well down the long access tube.

    Any ideas on that?

See the thread I posted and review in detail - a dead stop is much more accurate.

I don't want a dead stop thanks. I want a dial gauge. Can someone please recommend a dial gauge that works on the 456?

    Thanks

I used the hill kit on my 575, very easy to use. You can see TDC easily, and I did not find much dwell at all. Theoretically there should not be any dwell at all.

The dwell is a result of rod bearing clearance.
