Image Unavailable, Please Login Not sure what happened to the back of the spokes? Anodizing worn off ? Or was the wheel in contact with another type of metal when it was stored at the mechanic for 20 plus years?

Have you tried cleaning it? Maybe it's just grease.

Yes I have. It doesn't cone off with scotchbrite. I'll need to sand deeper. I guess I'll flat clear the back

Just looked at colorplus dye. 65 bux for a pint. That's way too much dye

The dye paints on like thin paint, there is no wiping required.
Write to Joanne Rice: [email protected] for a smaller quantity.
I am almost sure she can help you out.

Try not to sand off the clear anodizing, or go against the brushed grain. You won’t be able to replicate the grain once it is gone.

    I recommend #0000 steel wool and WD-40.

Update for anyone interest in my steering wheel saga. My wheels are out of customs. They didn’t like the surprise parts inside the box. My buddy in Germany is shipping them back to me. I will be shipping them to eastern europe myself one at a time. I won’t be sticking multiple high value wheels in a single box again. Too stressful!

Yes thanks I already took care of. it. Now I'm having a hard time deciding on what to do with my wheel. I cleaned it again with alcohol and a micro fiber. All that gray look is gone now, it was all dirt, sweat, and conditioner . I'm doing some test spots with the dye I have, and also with some conditioner only to see what looks the best.

And Yes no more high value wheels in a single box. Mike

Sorry I couldn't delete the previous post. So alcohol took off the stain look. Hmm... had you tried Simple Green or WD 40 before that?

The dye I have is not suitable for steering wheels,I spoke with Fiebings . I have a email to color plus. Also if you look at todays photo I scrubbed off all the grey from the original photo. too much build up of junk. I tried with just Lexol and it did get blacker but barely. Awaiting a reply from Colorplus if they have smaller quantities of dye/ kit. Thanks Afterburner

    Markos,
Update on my steering wheel recover after getting Vojin's contact info from you.
I contacted Vojin on January 22 and shipped out my steering wheel to him on Jan. 23. He received it in Serbia on Jan. 30, completed the work and shipped it back Feb. 12. I received it today, Feb.26. There were no problems in customs. He did a beautiful job and sent me pictures all during his recovering process. The steering wheel is from my 81 308 gtsi. Thank you. Afterburner Joanne at colorplus finally replied last week. So I replied back asking her suggestion as to what else I would need but no reply. I emailed her again yesterday and no reply yet. I put the wheel back on as it's going back to the body shop today for a issue under warranty. I'll have to deal with the wheel later

Stunning! I'm getting excited! My Alpina and Le Mans should be on my doorstep later this week. They escaped customs (again due to my mishap) and went back to Germany, and now to me. I have a stupid amount of wheels to send him at this point, I just need to get shipping. Two factory BMW wheels, a Momo A38, a Momo Clay Regazzoni, my 380mm Prototipo, and my 380mm Le Mans.

My A38 is a nice 1979 vintage, but it is a rather common Alpina wheel in the BMW community. I'm going to have him recover it in tan leather and use black stitching to give it some character.
