15685 is just a guess. Quite a few of the Daytona Comp cars have been painted with the White and Blue stripe.

The spectators always look so well turned out on Targa Florio pictures. Imagine the thought process....

Right chaps its Targa day, we are going to pile out of our simple flat into a tiny Fiat and stand by a dusty road in the sun all day.

    What shall we wear?
    Jacket? Check
    Shirt ? Check
Tie? Why not its only 80 degrees F !

Wasn't really a NASCAR crowd was it?

Well, I think most of race was made during the weekend for audience...
Normally, Sunday's people prefer to have
good clothes. It was like a tradition...

Thank goodness. There is no way I would pay money for a book showing these old cars racing with people dressed the way they do now, in the background.

A bygone era when most folks wore their Sunday best at events.
The comedian Sebastian Maniscalo said it best: "when you go out into the world, the world sees you".

Walter, the best I can do is that the Lotus IX (9) is definitely Len Bastrups and he only ran it with #41 in 1957. The closest entry I have found is for Thompson 1 Hour on Sept. 2nd BUT while my entry list has a matching 117 (Robert Pote's PBS Special) and Jaguar C-Type, it does not include a #62 of any sort....... I am confident we can narrow it to a 1957 event and it may be that I have researched an incomplete entry list....

Yes, very strange race. Unfortunately the reverse of this photo does not show any caption. For me it looks later than 1957. Are you sure with the Bastrups Lotus?

Not 100% but the rear is Lotus IX for sure and Bastrup ran his Lotus IX with #41, no guarantees since plenty of US specials were copies of European race cars, is the car in the second row #117 or 112 or something else because that air vent is 500TR/TRC style which is another big clue, although I couldn't find any Ferrari entries for either start #. The C-Type Jaguar would also be a clue if the image showed the start number.....

What about 0454MD for the #62 and 0518M for the #117 (both with Chevy engine at this time) ?

Likely 0518M - but I could not see an entry with start no. 117. The car was entered in that period in 3 races with no. 711.
As of 0454MD barchetta.cc does not list a single race with no.62.

    A mystery...?

Found another photo of the same event/venue with 2 Ferrari more in the back of the grid.

Any ideas about the VIN of both cars anyone?

So for the mystery race, I have collated the following
    #5 - Devin SS

    #50 - Austin-Healey

    ? - Jaguar XK120

    #1 - Ferrari (375 Plus)

    #92 - Ferrari (290MM) (0616?)

    #56 or 66 - Jaguar D-Type

    #2? - Genie?

    #71 - no idea (a US special)

    ? - Lotus XI

    #41 - Lotus IX (#41 - Bastrup regularly raced a #41 but only in ‘57)

    #62 - Ferrari Monza/ Mondial (strange hood/ bonnet - maybe a Chev V8?)(#0454M?)

    ? - Jaguar C-Type

    #117D/M (C/M?) Ferrari (500TR style air vent)(#0518M?)
