The engine ran well before removal apart from one distributor mechanical advance was sticking. I am tempted to change from points to electronic ignition whilst I have the distributors in pieces. Any recommendations as to which system to use ?

I can't remember off the top of my head the different systems but mine has a crane cams x3000 which has been in the car since the mid 1990s trouble free

I have got the Pertronix electronic ignition with flame thrower coils. These all fit into the original distributor, mine is the single distributor. So looks standard. Had the distributor overhauled and reset the mechanical advance, slightly modified though. Made a high difference. I did consider the Black Stallion one from Superformance but they had serious availability issues so was a no go. You can go crane and mappable timing curve but a lot more to fit. The chap who imports Pertronix in the U.K. is called Mark and he was a long time gt4 owner, which is now owned by another chap called Francis and has been very reliable. I have had no issues with Pertronix also. It’s DIY to fit if your reasonable tech.

Has anyone fitted the Airtek ignition conversion system that replaces the points?

I am in the Uk and never heard of these? Only 1 I would recommend is Pertronix for a standard distributor conversion. After this as said either Crane or speak with Nick Forza state side. Very limited conversions available here in UK worth using, remember what’s available in the aftermarket if it goes wrong.

That's a good tip on the Fein multi tool. My engine is in process of coming out and I was wondering how I am going to strip the old foam stuff. Incidentally I am replacing it with some foam backed thermal guard foil which I got from a company called Applications Engineering in Uckfield. Not the same texture as the original stuff but I think it will look good. Will let you know how I get on.

The Mark that Gavin mentions is Mark Hannaford of Pertronix UK based in Camberley. His tel no is 01276 65554. He's very knowledgeable and helpful. Yes, I own his old GT4 but mine has Magnettia Marelli electronic ignition fitted from new. Ferrari changed to electronic ignition in (I think I am right) Jul 1978

I did worry about the sodium valves but checked with the guy that rebuilt the engine in 1990 (long before I had it) and he said he replaced them with stainless steel ones, also high compression pistons, so that stopped me worrying

I am using a similar product which I used successfully to insulate the generator on my Lance truck camper. I have experimented spraying over it with white body schutz followed by silver paint as per original and it seems to work I will post a photo when I actually spray the firewall. The Feinn tool with a wide saw blade fitted also make a very good job of skimming crappy underseal off wheel arches and space frame members without marking the steel.

Interesting Jonathan. Can you give me the exact code of the Schutz. I've found this.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/3-X-MIPA-Overcoatable-Paintable-White-UNDERSEAL-Underbody-Stonechip-Schutz-Gun/2162268636?iid=162017517892

What silver paint have you used? Heat resistant or just normal? My engine is being taken out by QV London (the car is there now but they haven't yet got round to it yet but in net couple of days) and they are lending me their ramp for a couple of weeks while the work on the engine (fix a few oil leaks, valve clearances etc) giving me the opportunity clean up the engine compartment. so time is short. I would experiment on an off cut of the insulation material. Do you think I could paint it before installation as I don't want to do lots of masking in situ for overspray.

If this a good solution I'm sure many others will follow us.
BTW - I bought a new suitable blade from Screwfix today for my budget model multitool

Only query I would have is about the flammability of the Schutz paint. I have a particular phobia about engine compartment fires. I saw a GT4 at QV last year where the luggage compartment had caught fire, not the engine compartment, and is has since worried me

I shared your concern Francis and then reasoned that the original schutz applied to the engine bay cabin firewall painted over silver was also flammable and seemed to come to no harm. I actually removed it from the two removable covers behind the fuel tanks by setting fire to it ( out in the yard not in the car ). The luggage compartment floor above the silencer can get very hot and could easily set fire to the boot carpet if the insulation has for some reason been removed. I certainly would not apply schutz to that area.I think that as long as the full set of exhaust heat shields are in place on the front bank exhausts thers is enough clearance for it not to be a problem. Time and a long journey will tell!

I have the same MIPA Schutz, I was going to overspray with "Steel wheel" Simoniz spray which produces a very similar mottled grey/ silver to that applied to the fuel tanks.
Only thought I have about pre applying the Schutz is the strength of the adhesive on the insulating foam, if you assist it with a spray on adhesive applied to the bulkhead it should take the added weight. We will have to compare results, warming the bulkhead with a hot air gun will help with old schutz removal.

I bought some Tygris heavy duty spray adhesive which Applications Engineering recommended
I don't have any heatshields on my exhaust. The previous owner installed a ceramic coated Stebro exhaust. I have some Rust-Oleum stove and bbq heat resistant spray paint and also some engine + caliper brush on paint, both of which I need to experiment for colour etc.
