    Mario, that's a good question.

I'm not an expert, but I believe if the same conditions are met - load/speed/acceleration, a Ferrari (or any car) with an ICE will have worst fuel consumptions and emissions than a Ferrari with equivalent ICE plus electric motor/s (hybrid).

To accomplish a certain work, the first one will rely solely on the ICE (engine will have more load to carry), needing more fuel and revs to match the performance of the hybrid. This equals to more consumption (more anergy is needed), will dissipate more heat and emit more gases to the atmosphere.

The ICE on the hybrid car will need less work to accomplish, since part is being done by the electric motors.

Of course this discussion about pros/cons about the hybrid/electric solutions isn't so simple. We have yet to understand the effects of additional electricity generation to match the demand, grid overload, battery life/substitution/recycling, etc.. Unfortunately, most of the news about electric cars are based on simplistic soundbites (managed by some), so I guess we will understand the trade-offs only down the road once there is no turning back. Plus nobody is thinking about asset depreciation (most current petrol cars will depreciate extremely quickly) and recycling of current vehicles.

Ricardo thank you for the explanatio
Ricardo thank you for educating me on hybrid.
Thank you Ricardo for educating me on hybrids since they are the future.
So far I've understood that there are at least half a dozen different types of hybrid systems and the one developped by Ferrari for the LaFerrari is what experts call a mild hybrid. I believe it captures excess power under braking or when the engine produces a surplus of power to a battery pack and then to two electric motors. One of the motors provides boost to the V12 petrol engine and the other drives accessories but the car can't run just on batteries. Because there are other hybrid systems like for instance the one used in the Toyota Prius, that lets the vehicle run a mile or two on battery before the gasoline engine kicks in, and also the plug-in ones, the hybrid world is to me rather confusing. Nonetheless I've been trying to figure out which hybrid system Ferrari will adopt for the future cars but, having soon a bigger diversity of models for very different purposes, they'll probably will have to use more than one hybrid system.

    Mário,

Here is some humour, but like most jokes, there's some truth to it. And in practice, this pretty much sums it up in my humble opinion.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Nuno great post the drawings speak by themselves. In a world where the politically correct fallacy of the hiper clean electric prosperous, while the ecological foot print tells a completely different story, the two most populated countries China and India produce most of their electricity with coal.

...what will be of Ferrari's rear ends once they go full electric and there are no quad pipes?

    Very good question Ricardo.

Teslas have that problem and apparently there are owners that think the cars don't look cool at all without the exhaust pipes. A company named Borla spent nearly six months engineering a new Muted Rumble faux exhaust system for the Tesla Model S and they cal it a nonfunctional aftermarket exhaust system. There are firms also specialized in aftermarket faux engine sound systems for using in electric cars and with that much “faux” going on, it’s easy to understand that some of the electric car owners already miss the charisma of the ICE. The proverb “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” says it all.

You never can tell. They could be testing the mechanical package for the car or they could be testing a Stelvio variant.

It actually makes sense that Ferrari would use the Stelvio as a test mule, as it is a good base (namely the Quadrifoglio Verde chassis setting) for some real world testing.

I believe the design of the future Ferrari SUV will take some time to show up, even camouflaged, on the road. But I'm very inclined to believe that Ferrari will start testing mechanical solutions quite early, namely if powertrain is going to be all new (as opposed to simply "transplanting" an already existing powertrain from another Ferrari model in use).

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.
