    Hi all,

Does anybody know a source for a set of 275 Straight ear, knockoff spinners? I want original, Ferrari embossed ones.

Also - proving hard to get a firm answer from various sources such as GTO and Roelofs whether anybody produces 4 Cam Mag wheels (looking for a modern wheel due to the uncertainty over originals structural integrity)

    Thank you

I have searched for replacements for the Campagnolos on my 330 GTC for years without success and I don't think there is any supplier producing wheels to the original design. This is doubtless why most of these cars have been retrofitted with Borranis, which are available.

Also a word of caution about refurbishing Campags (or any magnesium wheels for that matter) / I came across many 'We can do any alloys. Mate', a few honest people who said that they could not handle them and just one or 2 who seemed to know what they were talking about. Despite having mine done - including crack testing -I would not be happy to use them under any stress.

Thanks John, these thoughts are pretty much what I expected - just hoped with the rise in values, and importance on originality, there would be a market for top quality replacements.

I echo your thoughts on a market for replacements. Many people think cars of this era actually look better on the original mags. These were fitted to 27 GTB, 330 and 365 GTC/GTS and 365 GT 2+2 and I guess all run the risk of age fatigue after ~50 years.

The 2+2 cars have 42 hubs vs. 32 hubs for 275 and the GTC/S cars.

Something to consider before fitting 15" wheels: Do 15" wheels and 215/70 VR15 tires clear the wheel wells, not only when stationary but also going over bumps and turning the car?

A different model I know but iirc Seth mentioned that the 15" Campagnolo wheels on 365 GTC (Speciale) 10581 fouled the wheel wells when turning or something like that and it was Ferrari who put the 15" wheels on this car. Standard 330 GTC and 365 GTC cars had 14" wheels. Perhaps Seth could chime in?

Seth's old car was the only GTC with 15" wheels to my knowledge.

Yes they do it is not that uncommon https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/275-gtb.html as 1968 was when low profile tyres came out, i imagine people might immediately feel old fashioned and want the modern technology.

It is another step in tyre technology. Up until 1964 cars tended to fit 185 section tyres, Then in 1964 Pirelli managed to make a 205 section tyre withstand the same speeds that up until then, only been managed with a 185 section tyres. so lots of cars that fitted 185VR16 tyres, with a 708mm diameter, all changed onto 15" wheels, that with the larger sectioned tyres came to the same 708mm

So when low profile tyres came out Ferrari went from 205VR14 to fitting 215/70VR15, because it's about the same diameter. (also early Dino 185VR14 changed to 205/70VR14 same rim diameter but wider lower tyre. E type Jaguar 185VR15 on the nice ones. 205/70VR15 on the not so nice series 3 with power steering. I don't think many cars went above 205 section tyres without powersteering, which is a guess why Ferrari didn't start fitting 225/70VR14. and for racing purposes the could afford to loose 1/2" of tyre side wall height. It is worth remarking that a 215/70VR15 will not give as nice ride as a 205R14. and the steering will be heavier and track more on uneven roads. however the differences will be subtle)

    Boring tyre history lecture over.

Often racing cars have 15" wheels the Competition fitment is:-
RW4010 https://www.borrani.com/catalog/product/view/id/242/s/ferrari-330-gto-borrani-wheels-rw-4010/category/1446/ on the front which is a 7" rim spoked to the outer bead seat.

And some opted for a different rear. RW 4011 https://www.borrani.com/catalog/product/view/id/243/s/ferrari-330-gto-borrani-wheels-rw-4011/category/1446/ which has a different rear offset, lacing the spokes to the central well and with a 7.5" rim. This will effectively widen the rear track, which i'm guessing they did to diminish over steer.

Or you can fit the RW 4010 front and rear

I don't know why this hasn't been put on our website yet, but it will be on there soon. https://www.borrani.com/ferrari-wheels/275-gtb.html

The Ferraris that used the 15" 10 hole alloy wheels of similar design did not use low profile tyres. No 275 used 70 profile tyres. The 275 GTB/C had 15" racing Borranis of full profile but that car had wider arches, at the back at least. There were also 2 275 GTB/C cars that were used on the road with 14" alloy wheels with full profile tyres.

miurasv, not exactly accurate. Most GTB/C used Dunlop M-Series racing tires, which are indeed low profile in aspect ration. The front Dunlop 5.50 M 15 is a little smaller in diameter than a 215/70VR15 tire (slight variations between tire brand); the rear Dunlop 6.00 M 15 is very close in diameter to 215/70VR15, within a few mm on paper. The M-series is not a "full profile" aspect ratio. Yes, the M-series are wider comparatively, hence the aspect is even lower profile than 215/70VR15. For the street using the competition 4010/4011 set of Borranis, the 215/70VR15 is the closest practical translation in spirit. Though just a touch wider, the 215/70VR15 is just a few mm smaller diameter than 205VR14 on the 14" wheel.

Thanks Lancia. I did wonder about the aspect ratio of the Dunlop R7 which the 275GTB/C used but it's not quoted in the size and given as 5.50 M 15 and 6.00 M 15. Part of the reason for the extra grip and the broken Borrani spokes must have been because of the lower profile?

Would the standard suspension set up of a street 275 GTB or 4 cam suit 15 inch wheels shod with 70 rather than 82 aspect ratio tyres?

As an example, the full profile 205VR14 XWX on paper is 686 mm diameter, 208 mm section. The lower profile 215/70VR15 XWX on paper is 683 mm diameter, 221 mm section. They appear so close in size/space that I would guess there is very little difference in influence on the suspension. The much wider, stickier Dunlop racing tires probably did stress the wire wheels in competition. Today, especially in Europe, 275's used competitively are often mounted with the Roelofs produced 15" magnesium wheel. By the way, the dimensional tire information is simply gathered from the web or literature from various tire sources/suppliers/manufacturers.

I was thinking in terms of the ride and extra grip from the lower profile tires with shorter sidewalls that the suspension may have to be set up differently but it's not as if the tires are super low profile I guess.
