    For some unknown reason, Richie befriended the drummer in my band and used to hang out with us in our rehearsal studio. He was a very funny and friendly guy who literally never stopped smoking pot. He would finish one joint and go straight on to another. He had an assistant, or maybe she was his handler, who was young and cute but hardly ever said anything. A white girl, I'd point out. Her job was to remind him when it was time to go, why, and where they were going. It was strange.

    RIP Richie, you were one of a kind.

    This was THE song that got me into learning all the classic solo electric guitar pieces. It was also what made me into a MESA/Boogie guy. I've had over a dozen Boogies since then. Was actually only the third guy in San Antonio to get one back in the summer of '77.

    I went on to learn Goodby Pork Pie Hat and Because We've Ended as Lovers by Jeff Beck, Room 335 and Mulberry Street by Larry Carlton. Many more.

    I guess since I'm a musician, I almost always have an ear worm in my head. Woke up yesterday and began to sing this spontaneously. Hadn't even listened to it in probably over twenty years. So I go to YouTube and listened to Leadbelly's version first, then CCR. What a timeless song: Cotton Fields Back Home.
